Lynn pondered in her mind which method of constraint should be used for the nuclear fusion reactor. After a while, she noticed Del standing by her side.
Seeing that the Star of Magic had finally come out of her thoughts, Del hurriedly reported, "My Lady, the wizards in the western empire who were pursued by the church have safely arrived at the City of Fire Oil."
"These are some personnel files that need attention!" Del said as he handed over a list.
Lynn reached out and took it. The names on it were written in a series, with about twenty names marked in yellow or red.
Although the Council had long possessed means of detecting divine arts to ensure that only wizards entered the City of Fire Oil, Lynn would never take these 'compatriots' lightly.
About two years ago, the disaster caused by the evil mage Merc, in the land of wizards, was still fresh in memoryβthe beginning of all this was when an archbishop disguised as a wizard infiltrated through means of reincarnation.
With this precedent, the Council naturally had to be cautious. So, at Lynn's suggestion, they added a small testβa psychic wizard secretly casting a spell to probe emotional fluctuations. Those wizards who reacted strongly while reading the notes would be suspected.
After all, the more devout believers were, the more angry they would feel towards the insults written on the notes, not to mention having to curse them out loud.
However, this method was not one hundred percent accurate. After all, the false god had considerable influence within the empire. Some wizards and apprentices within the empire even dared not speak their god's name out of extreme fear. So, it could only serve as a reference to screen out suspicious targets.
Lynn's gaze quickly swept over the list, and she was quite surprised to see a familiar name on it. She couldn't help but pause for a moment, a hint of surprise appearing on her face.
"Ivina..." Lynn whispered softly.
"My Lady, is this your acquaintance?" Del cautiously asked.
He naturally knew that the Star of Magic had been active within the empire before arriving in the land of wizards, so having a few acquaintances was normal.
The age and remarkable appearance of the other party made Del speculate differently.
"Sort of." Lynn nodded. Just by the name, she couldn't be sure, but if the age and hair color matched, then it was likely the person she knew.
At the time when she had just crossed over, in order to sneak into Harbor Town to find the hider, Lame Loude, to obtain a ticket to the land of wizards, she reluctantly borrowed the identity of his brother, Lot Pedro.
In the end, she didn't find the person she was looking for, but was caught by the steward and forced to enter Pedro's mansion.
Fortunately, the relationships within this dilapidated noble family were extremely complicated, or it could be described as twisted. Baron was immersed in power and influence, seemingly caring for his children, but in reality, he treated them as tools for power promotion and family revival.
And Ivina, the sister, was mixed with envy, jealousy, and hatred towards Lot.
Lynn remembered that before leaving Harbor Town by sea, to repay the favor of borrowing Lot's identity, she gave Ivina a good lesson, hoping to break this twisted family relationship.
Two years had passed, and had the other party become a wizard?
This was an unexpected change...
"Since she is your acquaintance, there is no need to investigate." Del picked up his pen, intending to cross out Ivina's name from the list, but Lynn shook her head and stopped him. "No, we're not that close. Let's follow the rules! Don't miss any possibilities because of me..."
Although he had some contact with Ivina, their relationship couldn't be considered good, and those were all things of the past. Lynn didn't intend to contact her again.
"I understand, my Lady." Del pondered for a moment, then marked Ivina's name with a note of special attention.
"Is there anything else to report?" Lynn noticed that Del didn't leave after taking back the list, so she spoke again.
"It's about the uranium mine... Recently, there have been attacks on guards and miners there, and even a golem has been gnawed." Del said with a trace of concern on his face.
Hearing this, Lynn's expression also became somewhat serious. The discovery of the demonic stone had made her speculate that there must be a creature, or even a group, capable of devouring nuclear fuel deep in the uranium mine.
During the time of mining uranium ore, the wizards responsible for exploring the mines had not been able to find these monsters, so they had been delaying dealing with it.
"Has the Council sent anyone to deal with it?" Lynn asked.
"Master Raphael has already taken a pair of alchemists to capture this monster, but so far, there has been no useful information returned." Del hesitated.
"In that case, I'll go take a look too!" Lynn was somewhat worried.
It was knee-jerk to know that such monsters could only be described as terrifying, and definitely not easy to deal with!
...
It took about five hours to travel from the City of Fire Oil to the capital, even by airship. By the time Lynn arrived at the uranium mine, it was early morning of the next day.
Thanks to the previous blockade by the church and rumors of demon curses, there were no people around the mine area, not even a shadow.
But Lynn knew very well that all of this was just a facade.
Aurora, who was proficient in visual illusion, had set up a large-scale polarizing magic here. The airship seemed to pass through a thin curtain of water, and the interior scene quickly appeared in front of her.
The area of this mine was vast, and the guards were extremely strict. Everywhere, one could see riflemen with modern flintlock rifles on guard duty and patrol.
The moment the airship penetrated the magic barrier, several machine guns and railguns had already aimed at it. This was still after Lynn had communicated in advance via electromagnetic waves; otherwise, the entire airship would have been shot full of holes by now.
Such strict precautions were also instructed by Lynn herself. The security level of this uranium mine was even higher than that of the capital and the City of Fire Oil! After all, once that false god got hold of a sample of uranium, there was a high probability that he could replicate his nuclear spell.
Then the Damocles sword hanging over their enemies' heads would fall on themselves!
The airship slowly landed on a clearing in the mine area, and Raphael, Alade, and Sanchez, who had received the news early, were already waiting there.
"It's really rare, Master Lynn, it seems your new research has been completed?" Raphael greeted Lynn warmly, coming forward to hug her.
He knew very well that this Star of Magic had been holed up in the laboratory researching new magical theories for the past few days.
Last time, she had revealed the internal structure of atoms and created the terrifying magic of nuclear fusion. He wondered what grand ideas she would come up with this time.
"Sort of." Lynn nodded, but did not reveal anything. Instead, she asked, "What about the monster that attacked the miners? Have you found its trail?"
"Not yet!" Raphael shook his
head somewhat helplessly. "Its speed is fast, and it appears and disappears mysteriously. So far, we haven't found even a hair of it, let alone knowing what this thing looks like."
As Raphael spoke, he showed Lynn the bodies of the miners who had been attacked.
The appearance looked very tragic, almost all of them were dismembered by a single blow, with a large amount of flesh mixed with blood piled up together, but Lynn still keenly noticed that these bodies did not bear any traces of being eaten.
On the contrary, the nearby broken golem had half of its head gnawed off.
Was flesh and blood not within the range of its diet?
Lynn immediately thought of this point and became even more interested in this peculiar monster.
Since it wasn't for hunting, the reasons for these miners being attacked were worth pondering.
"Where were they attacked?" Lynn asked in contemplation.
"It was deep inside the uranium mine." Raphael replied.
Through testing, the closer to the depths of the mine, the stronger the radiation, so they all suspected that the deepest part of the uranium mine was the lair of this monster, but they dared not enter recklessly.
Lynn suddenly understood that these miners must have stepped into the opponent's territory and were killed as invaders.
"In addition, we also found that this monster seems to be very interested in high-energy things that have not been eaten, so we are preparing to use this as bait to set up a trap to attract it." Alade said with a smile. "So your arrival today, Master Lynn, is just in time, otherwise, with just the three of us, I'm afraid we won't have the ability to capture it."
After witnessing the traces of the golem's head being destroyed, Raphael and the others were already prepared to apply for support from the council. At least they needed a council member to come over to have a chance of solving this matter.
They were clear about how tough the golem was; its whole body was made of mithril, so one must have a really good appetite to gnaw its head off and eat it directly!
Facing such an opponent, the hearts of the grand wizards were somewhat uneasy.
Fortunately, Lynn arrived in time, which gave Raphael and the others full confidence!
Unlike the confident Raphael and others, Lynn was not sure if she could handle it.
In his impression, monsters capable of devouring nuclear fuel only existed in the fantasies of an ancient movie from his previous life.
It seemed to be called... Godzilla?
But this mine obviously couldn't accommodate such a huge creature...
Under the enthusiastic invitation of Raphael and the others, Lynn still agreed to this capture operation. If they were scared and requested support without even seeing it, it would be somewhat unreasonable.
Even if this capture failed, they could at least find out more about the opponent.
...
It took about a morning to set up the trap, and Raphael's method was very simple. He let the miners enter the depths of the mine and continue to mine ore as usual.
The only difference was that there were many mithril ores filled with magic power beside them.
This satisfied their speculation about the two conditions for the attack...
High-quality food and invasion of territory!
"I say, isn't this a bit too obvious?" Lynn, who was hiding in the corner with concealment magic, glanced at the very conspicuous alchemical runes on the ground and couldn't help but comment.
"It should be fine, as long as they're not activated, there won't be any magical fluctuations." Raphael said confidently, not believing that the stupid monster could understand the meaning of the runes.
Lynn shook her head without saying more, but instead focused her attention on the miners.
These baits obviously knew they were in danger. Although their mining actions didn't stop, their legs were trembling faintly.
But Lynn didn't sympathize with them because there were only two types of people thrown here to mine uranium ore: either noble children who were keen on enslaving the poor on weekdays, or serious criminals facing the death penalty.
Since they came in, to ensure that the information wouldn't leak out again, they were exposed to radiation during the process of mining uranium ore, which was also a kind of alternative punishment.
As for the devout believers who were captured, Lynn dared not let them get close here, after all, the souls of these people who died would 'ascend' to heaven, which was equivalent to giving Aila information for free, so she sent them all to build roads!
Lynn, Raphael, Alade, and Sanchez waited quietly like this, with the continuous roar of machines in their ears, which was the sound of the drills held by the workers.
However, they waited for ten hours in a row, and they still didn't wait for the so-called attack.
"Could it be that it's already full?" Alade, who was waiting impatiently, couldn't help but speculate.
Raphael was also a little uncertain whether there was something wrong with his arrangement.
Just as several people were considering whether to let the workers stop and try again tomorrow, Lynn suddenly spoke up.
"It should have already arrived."
"Where?" Raphael hurriedly asked.
Lynn didn't answer, because she didn't know either, but a faint sense of threat rose in her heart.
Just as the miners were loading the mined uranium ore onto the mine cart and preparing to leave, a blue streamer flashed past. The whole world seemed to be split in half, and crimson blood sprayed out. In an instant, five miners along with the mine cart were torn into pieces...
Such fast speed...
A chill rose in the hearts of Raphael and the others, and Lynn finally caught a glimpse of the full picture of this monster. It looked about two meters tall, with a body that was azure in color, with a beast-like appearance, and its skin constantly flowing like flames...
No, using skin to describe it wasn't appropriate, because it didn't have flesh and blood at all. Its body was composed of pure energy, something Lynn had never seen before, a pure energy or elemental creature...
A born legend?!
The thought of fleeing arose in Lynn's heart...
