I had a few objectives for this story. Okay, more than a few, but some are germane to your comment. 1. I wanted the reader to feel like Saphienne feels, and to experience magic like Saphienne experiences it. I wanted them to have an inkling of how it'd be to be a wizard's apprentice of talent dropped in the deep end. 2. I wanted the magic in the story to be interrogable without being mechanistic. I wanted there to be rules, but to preserve the mysticism. We're just about done laying the foundation of that first part. In service to this, the magic is complex on first exposure, but after a while it starts to feel intuitive, such that things like the rules of augury and sympathy and resonance fall into the background because the results feel familiar. You can judge whether it works out as we go on. 3. I wanted the magic to superficially resemble the familiar Vancian archetype, and the tropes of "LitRPG" fiction that rips off the likes of Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder... but to slowly reveal itself to be more coherent. 4. I wanted the magic to be meaningful as more than just whizz-bang-pow special effects. I ardently believe that magic itself means something to people in the real world, whether or not it actually exists, and so it should mean something in fantasy worlds; I believe that magic should be either allegorical or a direct proxy for a meaningful part of life. Put it all together, and I drew on my knowledge of world mythology and ritual practices to pull together something that fulfils the above and blends into the assumptions people carry with them about elves. And that, hopefully, is engaging enough to carry the story longer term... whether or not Saphienne actually becomes a wizard.

OMG that ending though..... Fascinating earlier in the chapter too though. This is the real wizardry, the really nerdy stuff that people imagine but never take the time to actually detail. It's utterly gobsmacking to me how you think all this through.
