I agree. It will be more interesting to know Korea's historical background. 1987 was the setting of the times, when the head of the country was a soldier and soldiers were in power due to a military coup in 1979. It was actually a dictatorship. 1987 also voted for a new president. It can be seen as a transitional period when democracy began to take hold in dictatorship. There was a lot of political conspiracy and corruption during the period of dictatorship and democratic transition.

Watching this, its important to remember that the political climate in 1987 where this drama was set was very intense. A lot of people are protesting against the government due to corruption and there are also issues with Koreans from the North. So there are a lot of mix ups between protesters and north korean spies. Though not necessarily true to life, some aspects of this drama take inspiration from real life scenarios at that time wherein a lot of people became political prisoners for being accused as spies/protesters. It might help you in appreciating further episodes 🩷
