We appreciate you pointing out the food poisoning in the room, Ike, but keep noodling that nose in your housemates' personal space like that and you'll be eating PB and Js for the foreseeable future.
And since we're indulging in realistic elephant factoids today, peanuts are not, in fact, a natural part of a pachyderm's diet. This myth stems from the fact that zoos used to suck exponentially, and to make a few extra bucks the institutions would often sell people cheap snacks, like peanuts, to feed to the resident animals.
That red snapper DOES look pretty dapper, ngl.

Ike is being a bit of a butt, but I honestly feel that while yes, he has amazing sniffer powers, he could indeed kind of teach Clem (Pig noses aren't no slough) things to look for to avoid this sort of thing. I know Clem won't be able to catch everything because pig elephant noses, but some things could be taught!

Well that's a great question! Franzie of course speaks fluent German, and Alsesta and Clem learned the language to keep up with her. Franzie also knows some Swedish due to her friendship with Loggerhead. Alsesta, despite not really knowing her mother, embraced her Japanese heritage and learned the language; Clem is conversational, which gets her brownie points with her Japanese boss, Yuhka. Alsesta and her brother Dandy also know ASL due to their affiliation with a hard of hearing cousin. Riley, Ryleigh, Horatio, Elton, Tapia and (more recently) Beck are bilingual in Spanish (either due to their own culture or affiliation). Icy knows some Polish, though it's mostly curses. Red is somewhat conversational in French, Italian and German (it's a Euro thing). Evan knows Louisiana French. I am playing with the idea that there's a clicky sort of " mandible speak" that only bugs can pronounce, and Mantiski knows it, though I haven't had time to delve into that yet. There might be more but that's all I can think of now!

The whole thing about elephants communicating with each other from miles away via the soles of their feet IS extremely cool. As much as I appreciate the conservation efforts of the better zoos out there, I do fear that captive elephants are just that: captives.

Everything Ike is saying (though exaggerated for comedy) is true. Elephants should not eat peanuts because their protein content is too high, and they are inefficiently small. By the time you've gotten enough peanut calories to satisfy an elephant you've gone way overboard with the protein.

Some animals are not and never have been meant for captivity. Orcas and elephants are two prime examples.

They were also extremely cheap and zoos as a whole were more of a 'look at the animals' thing that cities had. The welfare of the animals did not really come to the mind of people until the late 60's or so, when animal behavior specialists and people started pointing out how completely and totally terrible the so called 'habitats' were. Some of it may be bullshitting, but the last thirty to forty years of research of elephants is yielding research that keeps revealing just how complex and able they are, much like the last twenty years of research is revealing the same about Orcas and how really fucking terrible it was that we were stealing them from their pods and putting them in fish tanks to often gruesome effect for both them and the humans taking care of them.

Is this an actual thing or is Ike just bullshitting? Peanuts were fed to elephants, I think, because they are very high fat and high protein, both invaluable to an herbivore. But they lack a ton of micronutrients, so a diet of them would quickly kill an elephant.

Man, Ike... Rude much? Even if you are right, there are 1. Better ways to express it and 2. Fox's ache man! Never insult the one who cooks you a free meal! You eat and puke with gratitude! And make your fucking chicken when YOU are on kitchen duty!
