🕑 Added 2023-10-17 14:16:10 +0000 UTCNot to shove information down anyone's throats, but since it's been a really long time since it was last mentioned, here's some context for the last scene in the chapter: Kayla first mentioned her own familial situation back when she asked Hu Qing to make a plaque for Wenyuan, and there's been a few other sparse mentions here and there after Wenyuan's soul fully merged with hers. But most of Kayla's mentions of her own past, especially when Wenyuan was still around, don't go back further than being an RA at college, and the vast majority of what she talks about are the three years of her post-college life as a broke cashier.

Every chapter of this story is consistently amazing and compelling. I'm *so* curious about how the relationship with Ashina is going to go. I want to thank you for the chapter and also curse you that I won't be able to find out how Ashina reacts until the next chapter. Grrrrr...and thanks, lol.

Thanks for the question! Kayla briefly mentioned her mother's backstory via the "I have a friend who..." format to Hu Qing a good while back. Her mother followed Kayla's father to the US, where he soon died in a traffic accident while working as a delivery biker (unfortunately this is based on several actual incidents in my community). As a result, Kayla's mother ended up becoming very controlling and paranoid that her child will be unable to make the best of her husband's sacrifice and end up living the same kind of life as her parents. She became obsessed with making Kayla "successful" at the cost of Kayla's mental health, and the two had a huge fall-out and cut off contact after Kayla admitted that she sought help from a therapist. The mother felt betrayed that all the effort and care she poured into Kayla was treated as something that Kayla needed help for, and Kayla was frustrated that her mother couldn't understand how damaging their relationship was for her. By the time Kayla transmigrated into Wenyuan, she wouldn't reach out to her mother for help even when she was about to become homeless.

Can you expand on Kayla's mother a bit more or would that spoiler? Seems like there's quite a bit of back story there and I'm unsure whether it's relevant to Surviving the Succession or not but it does sound interesting.
