Friends-Only Post No. 2: If It's Hip to Be Square, You Need Knees to Be a Cube
🕑 Added 2016-06-11 01:35:34 +0000 UTC Friends!Collision here for IDEOTVPOD. A firm and graceful "Howdy" to you all, and welcome to the second thrill-jammed issue of our weekly subscriber-exclusive email! Thank you so much for signing on to help us out: it means a ton, and we appreciate it enormously.
As you may know, we've got a bit of a contest going on right now: when the show cracks the $500 per month mark, J. and I have committed to getting the show's logo tattooed right on us, and we're not kidding even a little bit, and we're prepared to shoot some video of it. If you want to help us emblazon our commitment to the show right on our skin, spread the word, pass the hat, and help us get over the hump!
WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK
Well, we released our first friends-only show: an episode about Cube^2: Hypercube--the movie that says "Hey. You know what would be scary? If you were trapped in a small-ass room with a few mediocre actors and a 90s-era screensaver." --And we are NOT talking about flying toasters.
This one was a lot of fun to do, but I came in not entirely sure how it was going to work. I mean, I watch movies, I even watch BAD movies, but I didn't really know how to approach this project. So I decided to fall back on my standard plan: pay close attention, take detailed notes, and give myself plenty to work with. So I grabbed my notebook and my second-favorite green pen (a gift from Noodles, as was my favorite green pen) and besat myself on J. and Centa's couch with a delicious Mexican beer and prepared to do the work.
About halfway through the opening credits I said "oh for fuck's sake" for the first time and reached for my phone. Attached is a picture of the total notes I took during the ... "film".
(For context, the average book requires me to go through six or eight pages of notes.)
ANYway, it would not be easy to use words to describe how drab and dispiriting an experience it is to watch Cube^2. Unless you're, like, a fetishist who gets off on screensavers and Canadian accents. Which ... I guess that's plausible. Or if you've got J. there to keep you company, because that was fun as hell. But otherwise, I think my recommendation would be: hard pass.
That said ... like bad movies? SURE WE ALL DO. And if you like you bad movies, and having fun, I'd like to robustly recommend you check out Svengoolie, one of my favorite watching experiences of the past couple years. It's an old-fashioned monster-movie-with-host show, and it's straight-up delightful if that's the kind of thing you're into.
WHAT'S COMING
Check this out!
It was a good day for mail yesterday! Got a gift submission from Friend of the Show (Turbo-Gold Level) Jeremy Fakelastname, and got probably my favorite book of 1985 or so, the book that confirmed and canalized my lifelong devotion to HEAVY TUNES, the book that caused me to steal a T-square from summer camp. Yes, I am being deliberately obscure here. Let's just say that it's the rockingest pamphlet your favorite uncle could give you and leave it at that.
For now.
Also! Tonight marks our first live-and-in-person even since our live show! Beer, pizza, bad books and good vibes coming to the Pi Bar, 8:00 p.m., 25th and Valencia in San Francisco. Pix next week, if anybody remembers to take some.
Also also! Next week's episode is seriously one for the ages. Anger. Controversy. Capitalism, consumption, and privilege. Get your head right and get ready for what promises to be one rough ride.
Thanks for reading, everybody! Until next time,
ride the crab
