Very interesting. Always wondered, why football is so underepresented in the British settler colonies, as here in Germany it is known as as an English sport. Interestingly, Ireland always is the odd one out of the British nations, as it has a comparetively low presence of football, but a high presence of rugby. The colonial aspect would make sense here, too. Moreover, within European countries, football always was considered more lower-class. Even today you will find a higher proportion of football players with migrant backgrounds (most obvious when looking at the French national team). I actually remember the richer kids of my class prefering to play handball instead. I really love how football mirrors social developments. For most European countries you can spot regional economic differences by looking at its football clubs (e.g. why does most succesful club in Germany come from Munich and not Berlin). Looking forward to the episode! 😊
