Unseeing Ideology: A Marxist Analysis of The City & The City
🕑 Added 2025-04-21 13:16:34 +0000 UTCBreht was invited on to The Socialist Shelf podcast to talk about The City & The City by China Miéville -- a genre-bending noir that doubles as a brilliant Marxist allegory. We unpack how ideology shapes perception, how power constructs physical space, the shift we undergo from ideological subject to critical agent, Edward Said and Gramsci's concepts of the organic intellectual, and all the things in our society that we are trained to “unsee”.
Drawing on Althusser, Marxist human geography, and dialectical materialism, we explore the hidden meanings of Breach, the haunting possibility of Orciny, and the revolutionary implications of waking up to the real world beneath ideology.
If you’ve ever wondered how fiction can expose the mechanics of capitalism, state power, and false consciousness—this one’s for you.

I feel you, hard for me to find the time and energy for it too. 99% of what I read is non-fiction, admittedly.

This book sounds really interesting. I haven't had much time or energy for fiction lately but I'm going to check this one out.
