How you described Thiel reminded me of Hugh Jackman’s characters in the Darren Aronofsky film The Fountain (2006) (Sidenote: Aronofsky was set to direct Batman: Year 1 which featured Scarecrow as a villain. That woulda been neat but he wanted to make The Fountain so went to second best choice of Nolan. Information subject to poor memory or only rumors from years back)
