Today I'd like to share a few paintings I've made recently. As I told you in my last post, I dusted off my poster colours, and I started a new sketchbook. However, I quickly became dissatisfied with the way the paper warped and how the paintings on opposite pages were rubbing off on each other, practically destroying my work. So I returned to loose sheets of paper, which I can flatten easily. Also, I'll have the opportunity to frame and exhibit some of the paintings!
I enjoy playing with a cel shaded look for the main subjects, juxtaposed against a realistic background. In other words, a classic animation style. Here are all the paintings and a few notes:
This is based on a photo I took when I visited the Ise shrine in Japan last year. The scenery around it is absolutely gorgeous, and I remember the trees more vividly than the actual shrine.
The man is also based on an actual person I saw in Japan. He was shopping, and huge green leaves were sticking out of his backpack. What a character! And I'm fascinated with white crows at the moment.
Here's a frog that took a bath in my rain barrel this summer.
Just some radishes. I enjoyed the pop of magenta and the simple style.
Deer I saw in Nara. I especially love the one at the top. It looks so shy and cautious.
