I'm betting there wasn't a seal placed over his memories, and since he seems to be aware of Asterios there may be a connection between them that Ast isn't aware of because of the seal.

Red and Kaguya don't use a name in any of the flashbacks, so who knows what they call him? As for a possible connection between the two halves, the black Asterios seems to at least be aware of red Astrios's existence, so it is a possibility.
