This is all for you, folks! I got so many requests for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and it seems that everybody is playing it these days, so I couldn't let it pass unmodded.
And I have to say, the game kind of grows on you. In many ways, it plays similarly to Red Dead Redemption II. Mud? Check. Horses? Check. Deep and meaningful interactions with the other characters in the story? Check. Although instead of guns you're slinging swords.
So, without further ado: release 18.0.0 of the R.E.A.L. VR mod, attached at the end of this post, adds a Kingdom Come: Deliverance II cartridge to our virtual time console. Set your dials for year 1403, and be sure to wear comfortable and durable shoes!

Setup
I developed and tested the KCD2 mod using the Steam version of the game; other editions should also work, but if you encounter issues please upload your RealVR.log file somewhere so we can sort them out. Also, always make sure that your video drivers are updated to the latest version. This is especially important these days for NVIDIA cards because the launch of the 50xx series brought several regressions to the drivers, so make sure to have the current 572.83 version.
Run the game flat (not in VR) at least once: it will generate its config files and you can check that it works correctly. Then quit out of it and extract the mod archive into the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\KingdomComeDeliverance2\Bin\Win64MasterMasterSteamPGO" folder (is it just me or are these paths getting ridiculous?). Double check that you are in the folder containing the main "KingdomCome.exe" executable file. The root KingdomComeDeliverance2 folder, which is the place where you install most other mods, will not work here because it's not where the .exe file is located.
Finally run RealConfig.bat. It will perform a few required operations (including the v-sync fix for NVIDIA drivers) and preselect graphics settings that are known to work well in VR. Remember that running RealConfig is mandatory; if you omit this step the mod will not work.
At this point, the next time you launch Kingdom Come: Deliverance II it should automatically display in your VR headset. But wait a second before you put on your armor and helmet: let's first tweak a few things in-game, in order to get the best possible experience.
Setting the resolution
You will need to play in windowed mode. I modded the high resolutions needed for VR directly into the game, so you can select them normally from the Settings> Graphics Settings menu. You will notice that they have a strange aspect ratio. That's because the game has trouble rendering correctly with an A/R narrower than 11:9 (titles and captions don't fit entirely in the visible area), so that's the ratio I chose for the resolution list.
Should you wish to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your GPU (and who doesn't?) you can also tailor the resolution to your specific VR headset by bringing up the mod overlay and looking for a slider in the main "R.E.A.L. VR" tab named "Target pixels per degree". Set it to a value approximately in the range 15-30 depending on your GPU, then press the "Adapt resolution" button to set the game resolution to your preferred value. You can do that at any moment, even during actual gameplay. Just be mindful that if you use the slider and your headset asks for an aspect ratio which is narrower than 11:9, the titles and captions will be cut off at the sides. Everything else should work fine though!
Cutscenes
Cutscenes are fully 3D and allow you to look anywhere without restrictions. The cinematics quality is mostly very good, although as usual there will be some missing props, feet below the ground, levitating knights on invisible horses and so on in the parts of the scene that you were never supposed to see in the flat game.
Some cutscenes were pre-recorded by the developers and stored as video files: I have no choice but to display them on a 2D virtual screen.
I already unlocked the 30 fps cap that this game forces on in-engine cutscenes, so they'll be perfectly fluid in VR and you will not need to install a third-party mod to fix that.
Game options
You can set all graphics and gameplay options in the Settings menu according to your liking and how powerful your GPU is, but there are a few settings that you must leave to the defaults preselected by RealConfig in order for the mod to work properly. Specifically:
In the Game Settings submenu: keep the Subtitle size at Small (in VR this translates to "still huge, but a bit less so")
In the Graphics submenu:
Window mode: Window
VSync: Off
Frame rate limit: 240 FPS (the original game has a hard cap at your desktop monitor display frequency, so typically 60 Hz. I removed that cap and the limiter now goes all the way up to 240)
In the Resolution scaling section:
if you have an NVIDIA card, the best configuration is DLSS4, Transformer model and Sharpness about halfway, as with DLSS you'll be able to use my stereoscopic fix, DL(S)SS. You can choose the Mode (aka Preset) to get the best visual compromise between fluidity and detail. If you have an AMD card, you should still be able to get pretty good results in this title, with very little ghosting!
In the Camera Effects section:
Motion Blur: must be Off (this is very important in all my mods to avoid everything looking smeared and blurry)
Near DOF: recommended Off
Everything else can be set according to your preferences, but please pay attention to one additional detail: RealConfig will drop a "user.cfg" file into your game root folder, [...]\KingdomComeDeliverance2. The file only contains two commands:
r_DepthOfField = 0
wh_horse_CameraCentering = 0
The first one will get rid of the super-exaggerated DoF effect in cutscenes that makes them look as though you're in serious need of eyeglasses. The second will stop the camera from constantly trying to realign with the direction your horse is going. Seriously, why don't developers put menu options for those things? If you install other mods that overwrite the "user.cfg" file, make sure to add back those two lines manually.

Input
You will want to use a gamepad to play Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (XInput-compatible controllers like the ones from Microsoft are usually the best for my mods, but this game also supports the special features of the DualSense for wired play). Keyboard and mouse sort of work too, but there might be issues, like mouse clicks activating other windows at random or some entries in the game menus being unreachable with the cursor; thus, in order to have a smooth experience, using a gamepad is highly recommended.
Don't worry about console-player syndrome: in my mods aiming is gaze-driven and extremely fast, intuitive and accurate, so even if you're used to playing FPS with your mouse, give your gamepad a chance ;-)
HUD
I did my best to put all the visual indicators in their proper 3D positions, and the result looks good enough. The labels that pop up when you gaze at herbs, ingredients, weapon etc. can still be somewhat jittery, but after a few minutes you'll learn where to look in order to keep them stable.
Gameplay
The Kingdom Come: Deliverance II mod supports 6 DoF tracking, i.e, the camera will follow your head rotation and movement.
In the "KCD2" tab you can change the world scale, from small adjustments to playing with dolls or giants, and even force the game to render to a 2D virtual screen in case you should find a section too hard to play in full VR. You can optionally bind the 2D virtual screen toggle to a keyboard shortcut of your choice.
From the same tab you can also toggle the DL(S)SS fix on and off. The fix works well enough, but it's not perfect :-( Unfortunately the problem is with the game and/or the engine itself: even if you turn off my fix and set the renderer to Mono, the world will still shimmer somewhat, which means that it's a bug with their DLSS implementation. I spent several days trying to find and fix the bug, but I was unsuccessful, so we can only hope that they solve the issue in an official patch. DLSS 4 and the Transformer model, though not perfect, do look somewhat better :-)

Hello, can anyone confirm it still works today? It's not launching in VR (just shaky jiggly 2D). Pretty sure I followed instructions exactly as written. Kept ratio window mode dlss4 transformation + enabled fix etc..

I think there is a bug since the new patch. VR is very flickery when trying to do alchemy and lock picking is also broken :(

After the fix drops for KCD2 in the next release, you should be able to do everything basically fine in VR. Of course everything is not going to be perfect, but it should all basically work as intended.

I'd be curious to know for this game but really most games, how close you are to be able to play a game end-to-end. To my understanding most games are basically there (so you don't have to disable the mod and play bits manually) but it would be good to maybe give games a score from 1-100 where 1=ok, you see an image and 50=you can do the main gameplay loop but minigames, menus don't work or are trickier than they are supposed to be in interesting ways and 100=this is now basically a VR native experience....

Hello, KCD2 was recently updated (patch 1.3 2025/05/17). Lock picking doesn't work as it did before the update (alternating between 3D and 2D). It also seems that the image quality has degraded slightly...

You should be able to use Oculus runtime with VD. Just select VDXR in the streamer app and make sure you have the Meta PC app downloaded on your system.

So I did a thing and bought a Quest 3! I'm using virtual desktop but it doesn't let me render in oculus or Auto. Can only do it in openxr or openvr. What's the best render option for the quest 3? Oh and I have hud in mono at least!
