After being pulled back by Kairo Retsu, David still hadn’t come down from his rage. His expression remained fierce.
But Joseph Joestar was already the first to act, scattering Recovery Medicine over Gloria’s body.
Seeing the medicine taking effect on Gloria, Kairo Retsu finally let out a sigh of relief.
If Gloria had really died, the Gathering Hub might’ve seen its first Hunter driven to extremes.
“Your mom’s fine.”
Kairo Retsu grabbed David’s head with both hands, forcing him to meet his gaze. “Listen to the Guildmaster. Take your mom home. Let her lie down and rest properly. Then take a good look at yourself and figure out what comes next.”
“Leave the rest to us adults, alright?” Kairo Retsu spoke gently, trying to soothe him. “Joseph, I’m counting on you to go with David. With your Stand, you can help cover for the fact that he doesn’t have any cyberware right now.”
“Got it.”
Joseph didn’t waste words. He picked up a bedsheet from the side, bundled up Gloria, and motioned for David to lead the way with a tap on the leg.
Joseph didn’t know the layout of Night City at all—he’d have to rely on David for that.
Once they’d left, Kairo Retsu looked down at the scavver whose skull he’d crushed. Leaning against the operating table, he gagged and vomited.
“Ugh… Splattered all over. So damn gross.”
Himmel glanced over after watching him puke twice, then gave the corpse a solid kick. “He deserved it.”
“You… alright?” Himmel asked, concerned. “You don’t seem used to this.”
“It’s fine. Just a normal physical reaction,” Kairo Retsu replied while rummaging through his pack. “I’ll puke my guts out while I kill the rest of these scavvers.”
He kept talking as he pulled out more vials of Recovery Medicine.
There were still several mangled corpses in the room—people who’d had their cyberware and organs harvested.
Kairo Retsu went to each of them, pouring Recovery Medicine down their throats.
But… most of them didn’t respond. Only two showed signs of recovery as the medicine repaired their broken bodies.
“Himmel, I’ll leave it to you.”
Kairo Retsu laid the two survivors in a corner before wiping down his Sword & Shield. “If you don’t want to do the rest, I’ll handle everything myself.”
He continued, “At this point, it’s got nothing to do with demons or anything like that.”
“If you can see all this and still do nothing… you’re bound to let someone down.” Himmel shook his head and looked toward the operating table and the floor, where the remains of once-human bodies lay.
“You’re a good man, Hero,” Kairo Retsu grinned, wiping the last of the vomit from the corner of his mouth. “If only there were more of you.”
“You’re one too,” Himmel replied, meeting Kairo’s eyes. “If there were more like you—leading and guiding others—we’d all get along better.”
“Nah. I’m just a wimp who can’t fight, freaks out at gore, and nearly loses it when he sees this stuff…” Kairo Retsu scratched his head. “We need people who’re actually useful.”
“That has nothing to do with it,” Himmel said. “Honestly… with you as the Guildmaster, I feel like I can finally fit in here.”
“I’ll take it from here.”
Himmel smiled gently—and in that moment, his body flickered.
In Kairo Retsu’s stunned gaze, the wall behind Himmel split into several clean slabs, and the scavvers lurking behind it—guns at the ready—collapsed to the ground alongside the falling rubble.
“Even as a Hero from another world, I can’t stand idly by at a scene like this,” Himmel said plainly. “Luckily, my power’s still enough to handle this.”
“Damn…”
Kairo muttered as he stared at the cleanly bisected wall and unconscious scavvers. “Now the Gathering Hub’s really got a divine protector you can call with a signal flare…”
“Hey! You two punks! What the hell you lookin’ at?!”
A few street thugs leaning against a beat-up car shouted at David and Joseph, who’d just appeared from some unknown alley. “One of ya’s wearin’ a damn Halloween mask and carryin’ some chick… Get lost or get gutted!”
“…Huh?”
A strange, nostalgic sensation twitched in Joseph’s brow.
It felt just like the streets of America he once knew…
Wait.
He remembered what Kairo Retsu had said—Night City was a city in the U.S.
This was 2077. He’d come from 1938…
A hundred years had passed, and American street trash hadn’t changed a damn bit?
“Huh?!”
Joseph snapped. “Back when I was brawlin’ on the streets of New York, punks like you weren’t even born yet!”
“F*** you!” The thugs shouted, immediately going for their guns and blades, ready to jump the pair.
But Joseph had already unleashed Hermit Purple.
The thorny purple vines surged forward, piercing through the cyberware-laced body of the lead thug—and instantly shut him down.
Before the thug even realized what had happened, his vision went black, and his modified legs gave out. He collapsed like a puppet with cut strings.
“They’ve got a Netrunner!” one of the others shouted. “One of ’em’s a hacker!”
But Hermit Purple had already wrapped around the rest.
David stared, dumbfounded, as Joseph casually waved his hand—and every thug collapsed like dominoes.
Where were Joseph’s cybermods? What were those guys even talking about?
And how had Joseph pulled off what felt like some top-tier netrunner trick—just by waving his hand?
“Nobody knows the American streets better than me!” Joseph barked, kicking aside the collapsed goons and snatching a set of car keys from one of them. “David! Directions! We’re driving back!”
“Huh? Uh… okay…” David stumbled into the car, still in a daze.
Then Joseph stomped on the gas pedal, sending the stolen vehicle rocketing down the street.
“Now this is more like it!”
Joseph beamed and rolled down the window, letting the wind whip past him.
“Night City’s streets really aren’t that different from New York!”
