I glanced at her sideways, closing my eyes for a moment as I tried to contain my impatience. After leaving the princess and saying our goodbyes, we had returned to the Rogue Shadow. Now, I was at the controls, piloting the ship with a focus that was more about keeping my mind occupied than anything else.
"I have to go to Coruscant. The princess's father, Bail Organa, asked me to escort a friend of his from the Senate. Basically, I'll be her bodyguard," I replied calmly, not taking my eyes off the indicators in front of me.
"And you agreed? Why?" she asked, crossing her arms as she looked at me with a mix of curiosity and disapproval.
I paused for a moment before answering, letting the image of that barren world with bright green fissures form once again in my mind.
"He’s offering me something I want… and he’ll pay me well." I paused, recalling the pouch Organa had handed me. "Oh, and speaking of that…" I reached into a nearby compartment, pulled out the small cloth pouch filled with credits, and tossed it to her with a casual motion. "Give that to Hera and Kanan when you see them."
Sabine caught the pouch easily but frowned as she examined it. "When I see them? So, you’re not coming with us?"
"Didn’t you hear me?" I responded with slight exasperation. "I have to go to Coruscant, and before that, I need to make a stop. I need to change the ship's codes and, while I’m at it, give it a new look. This hunk of junk desperately needs a fresh coat of paint anyway."
"Can’t I come with you?" she asked, this time in a softer tone.
I knew her question didn’t come from curiosity but from a mix of concern and something deeper. I looked at her for a moment before shaking my head.
"You know I can’t let you. The mission is for me alone. I can’t even take PROXY with me. He’ll have to stay here on the ship."
"Wait, what?" interrupted the droid at the mention of his name, turning his head toward me in what seemed to be a simulated expression of surprise.
"It’s just that I thought, after dropping off the princess, we could spend some time together," Sabine admitted, her voice tinged with disappointment. "It feels like lately, all you do is jump from one mission to the next, risking your neck every time."
"Yeah, sounds familiar," I replied sarcastically, diverting my gaze back to the ship’s controls.
"Hey, you went on those missions too," she retorted, her tone shifting to a more defensive one.
"Yeah, but I don’t hold it against you," I replied calmly, which brought a faint smile to her face.
"Fair enough, but… do you know where they are now? Since what happened at the communication tower, we haven’t been able to set foot on that planet."
"Of course I do. Bail Organa gave me their location," I said, activating a hologram of the galaxy map. A small blinking dot appeared in the Outer Rim Territories. "They’re with the Phoenix Squadron, right here," I added, pointing to the marked location on the map.
"Really?" Sabine asked, leaning forward to get a better look at the hologram. "And who’s Phoenix Squadron?"
"That’s something you’ll have to figure out. Organa didn’t give me many details, but he assured me they’re there. I’ll input the coordinates and take you to them."
"Okay, okay." Sabine replied with a resigned sigh, sitting down beside me and crossing her arms in a gesture that combined frustration and acceptance.
A little later, we jumped into hyperspace, the characteristic sound filling the cockpit as the stars stretched into lines of light.
"All set. We should arrive in about two hours at most," I announced as I stepped away from the controls, setting the ship to autopilot.
"Two hours, huh?" Sabine murmured, her tone different this time, prompting me to glance at her.
"Yeah, why? What are you thinking?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as I noticed the look she was giving me. There was something in her eyes, an expression unlike her usual demeanor, as if she were daring me to understand what she wanted without needing to say it outright.
That’s when it all clicked.
"Oh, I see," I said, turning toward PROXY, who appeared to be absorbed in exploring information about different weapon models on the Holonet. "PROXY, Sabine and I will be busy in the back for a while. Keep an eye on the controls, will you?"
"Of course, master," replied the droid, nodding obediently.
Sabine and I stood up at the same time, sharing a glance that conveyed more than words ever could, before heading together toward the back of the ship.

Once we reached the back of the ship, we headed to the only room available: the captain’s quarters. I closed the door behind me, hearing the soft sound of Sabine removing her clothes.
