You alredy touched on how screwed up the U.S. was on machine guns with the Lewis gun, even after they fixed it it was a major pain to get it accepted.

Had a number of discussions with my dad, who was a machine gunner (Browning water cooled) in WWII. He remarked that he rarely if ever used the sights. Tracers and walking the impacts into the target was how he did it. He also said that unless set up in a fixed defensive position, they rarely locked the gun down and just freewheeled it. Your observations are validated by real combat (at least in WWII).
