Petunia went in for the finishing blow, and someone intervened. Most likely her dad if the tail and weapon are anything to judge by. And as her spell dictates, any blows Petunia deals to someone will reverberate back to her. Poppy was the exception to this rule because she's an opossum and nullifies any magic. But Alvus intervened, just as Petunia was about to deal a super powerful attack. It's gonna go back to her. She has made a terrible, terrible mistake.
