If You Are In Northern Bangkok 3 Gyms To Visit

Often when we film for the Muay Thai Library viewers and students don't really have a sense of the relationship of gyms to each other on the map, so here is a quick suggestion of 3 different style gyms you can visit that are close together in Northern Bangkok, each of them with very unique training experiences you won't get anywhere else in Thailand.
These gyms are also friendly with each other - something that is important in Thailand - krus even visting each other's gyms to hang out.

The idea here is great private training to be had, this is something we know a lot about because we've filmed with everyone. And, you have the added benefit of being able to study up on each kru in the MTL to get an edge and the most out of your privates. Knowing where gyms are in relation to each other can help you centrally locate yourself and experience unequaled variety and in-depth discovery. Thailand is so rich in Muay Thai knowledge and heritage, its wonderful that these three gyms, with very different training experiences, are close together...but you might not have realized it, so we made a post.
Samart's Muay Thai Gym
Here you can train with Kongtoranee, Karuhat and Samart, among others. You can contact the gym here on Facebook.
Samart's is 10 km or so, as the crow flies, from Chatchai's gym.
Thai Payak Gym (Chatchai Sasakul Gym)
Chatchai is the best boxing coach in Thailand, and his private sessions are so good. He sees no essential conflict between Muay Thai and Boxing, and his principles of weight transfer apply in each art. Contact the gym here on Instagram.
Takrowlek's gym is only 4 km from Samart's.
Takrowlek's Muay Thai Gym
This is maybe the most interesting of all the opportunities, because you'll never find it on your own (most likely). It's the home gym of Takrowlek Dejrat who teaches a beautiful low kick and Muay Maat style, classic from the Golden Age. These small gyms are prescious in Thailand, connected to the house of an ex-fighter, where they can still impart their knowledge. Here you'll get very personalized focus, and lots of detailed correction.

One of the great low kicking fighters of the Golden Age teaches his squared up, pressuring, Muay Beuk fight philosophy which uses an extremely fast, vertical low kicking technique that keeps the opponent exactly where you want them. This punishing style, built on defense and ring control is extremely effective, using techniques that are not often taught. Study the low kick in a way you haven't seen before.

Perhaps no other fighter in the Library is as loved and learned from than Chatchai. He has a gift for making beautiful corrections to technique & balance that impact the whole fighting style. This session is all about how to develop feeling in your hands, learning from Thailand's best Boxing Coach, and long time Golden Age Muay Thai fighter.

Such economy of movement expresses the true beauty in his style, quite different than - but no less admirable - that of his young brother Samart.

Hi Sylvie! I'm going to try and train at one of these three gyms when I'm in Thailand during the summer. Now, I don't a lick of speaking thai. I'm wondering how do I communicate with the coaches while getting personal instruction? Are there specific phrases or words you can point out for me to use? Thank you :)

I don't know many gyms with kids in Bangkok, but there are some with really little kids and maybe some with young teenagers around in there. Ask on the roundtable forum, the community there has gym reviews that are more recent and first-hand than I can provide: 8limbsus.com/muay-thai-forum

Dear Sylvie, thanks again for everything you are doing for us nerds. I was wondering quite some time where exactly would be the right place to ask you, Kevin and the network if there is a good gym in Bangkok that also provides a safe environment to learn for my kids? They are intrinsically motivated but as a dad teaching them it is not optimal…So with this post I thought this might be somewhat on topic. I look for an environment that I can get private lessons with an experienced trainer but where is also a “normal” environment for kids to try out the sport in more depth. I would prob. prefer traditional places than places run over by foreign fighters…(no offense to them) but also I would not want them to be made to fight to early. We are ethnic Asians socialized in europe and we usually get along really well with the wonderful people of Thailand.
