“The tongue-lashing can wait. I expect your parents will want to be in the room for that—along with Colonel Guest. So enjoy the reprieve. Like the doc said… We are glad to have you back.”
Viv looked at once relieved and more nervous, but she managed an unsteady salute just the same.
“Yes, ma’am. Thank you, ma’am.”
Dent nodded, then turned to join the pair waiting outside for her. She paused just inside the door though, and—almost as an afterthought—swiped at the wall beside the frame to bring up the room controls. A couple of quick button presses, and when she stepped out the door closed behind her, offering Firesong—all of Firesong, for the first time in weeks—some privacy.
There was a pause, the entire squad blink at the closed steel, suprised.
And then, without warning, Chancery whirled, stomped over to Viv, and took her face in both hands.
“Viviana.” The girl’s voice was poisoned sugar, much like Aria’s when she was particularly vex. “My sweet. My adorable little madwoman. Confirm something for me, would you?”
“Y-Yeah…?” Viv’s eyes were wide, her thin cheeks lifted and lips pucker as the were squeezed by Chancery.
“Gemela is fine, right? Working ordinarily? No problems?”
“Uh.. Should be? I haven’t really had the chance to—?”
“So your reactive shielding is still up? Still good?”
“P-probably…? Like I said I haven’t—”
“Good enough for me,” Chancery said with a smile that could have cut through steel.
And then, before anyone could stop her, the Lancer hauled back, then headbutted Viv square in the forehead with a thunk.

That’s true - and unlike football helmets I’m guessing reactive shielding or whatever a device does with a user prevents concussions from the brain bouncing around in the skull - given all the impacts users take - without reported issues

Me too! 😆🤣😂 I've been sneak-peaking my phone since midnight anxiously waiting for a tender Stormweaver morsel and I thought the same. Sooo... now I'm even more anxious after that uhmmm, like that wasn't even a chicken nugget Bryce... lol. That was a crumble of a cliff hanger. You got me all twitchy and what not... When I started reading I got 'sneak peak' then ' spear the tongue lashing' I thought Bryce was telling us to hold our 🔥. Took me a minute to realize I was already reading the sneak peak. LOL 😂 you got me Bryce. That said, my jaw is hanging open.....I love it...Chancery way to go.
