Why would Rei think it would be anything other than his family realising he is not an embarrasment to them? Suddenly he's succeeding, and they go 'oh my Boy, we are so proud of you, here take a million credits!'....would you believe that?

Can't wait for Rei's sister to show up to the academy. She's a 2nd year, right? I really hope that she's the doting, overprotective type. She could be the bridge that brings Rei and Kamiya back together. It's a little annoying that Rei immediately assumed the worst possible scenario where his entire family abandoned him, so he just hates them by default. Like, it's JUST your parents man, your grandfather would literally bankrupt his empire to get to know you. And your sister threatened to kill your father when she found out you're alive.

So…here’s the thing. I’m registering to Fire & Song, & specifically the MIND’s recap that a “rogue element” must have accessed the system. In conjunction with the revelation of time walking revealed in recent blurbs, I’m forced to conclude that Central had nothing to do with it. Future Rei did it. He understood its impact in retrospect, and he reprogrammed the parameter system to hammer his young self with S0’s. Thoughts?

This is exhausting. I'm so tired of the cliff hangers and it's seems like the poney's one trick is that someone is constantly hurt, seriously every book, " oh no someone's in the hospital and they are hurt badly, will they be OK?!" ( intense sarcasm) like seriously this should only be a thing one or twice....what are we up to 5 times now? We had Rei's first fight with Ariea, then he gets mugged, then gets mugged again by robots, and all if these instance the reader gets worried because he needs immediate medical care...now you're doing the same thing with his best friend? Mix it up a little.

There is a difference between pushing him harder and harming him. With the exception of the changed fights in the school tournament, every time they have "pushed" Rei, he's ended up in the hospital with steadily worsening injuries. If they aren't careful, in their attempts to push him to be stronger, they are going to kill him and then where will they be? Viv fought one S0 hologram a couple of times and ended up in the hospital with brain swelling. Rei was attacked by six S0 holograms at the same time and actually felt himself dying. Who knows how long they would have "pushed" him if Dent hadn't broken through the security.

What some people don't understand is the military has the right to control when it's soldiers eat, sleep, train, etc. General Abel had every right to test rei the way she does. If you are paying attention in the other books you know that they are living on borrowed time here. They have to make him as strong as possible as fast as they can. That means pushing him harder then they do a normal rank and file soldier.

I don't think people understand that rei is a cadet in the military, you better believe that our military tells it's soldier when to eat, sleep, train, etc. General Abel is not a bully for deciding when and how to test her cadets. It's a little different with an officer of the same rank, say she is a five star General in charge of the entire military she can tell another 5 star what to do to a certain extent.

I was just wondering Rei sign the contract, so does that mean when The grandfather finds out about Viv they said their medical experts to help out cause she’s in the contract too, right?

Hi - it's when Shido (Rei's CAD) gives him a new message about establishing a link with Gemela (Viv's CAD) - that link was something new that has never happened before, leading Rei to conclude something happened to Viv. But yes- this happened right after he negotiates the sponsorship with his family - & remember these are unedited rough draft chapters, so I'm sure future/ final draft will distinguish between/clarify those moments a little better - cheers

It might be because of her character in The Expanse, but whenever I see some of the spoken lines by Shira Abel, I always hear Shohreh Aghdashloo's voice saying the lines. Awesome rewrite, and I hope that developing her owmn UUA is the start of getting the sassy, confident Viv back, rather than that simply being the mask she puts on around people.

Loved it, good re-write! I am obsessed with this world and these characters! I had re-read Book 1 before reading Book 2 as soon as it came out, then went back and re-re-read Book 1 and just finished Book 2 again... can't wait for more!!! I love how REAL it feels and how well the story flows! It is wonderful to follow characters who actually show common sense and logic - and when they don't (cough - Viv - cough) there is a clear reason and a build up why their head has not been on right. Looking forward to the next chapters!!

Also, my head canon has Kestrel ask Dent if Viv is wearing Cerebro and reading their thoughts and Dent tells Kes “not the time!” And Kes responds, “I thought you liked the old entertainment references.” “NOT THE TIME”. Which is why it can’t be in this chapter since it would break up the tense situation buildup.

Wonder if she was “really” in system (smells like the old “happened to be in the neighborhood”). She did know Laurent was leaving as he hung up.

I like the revision. Feels more dramatic and adds more urgency to the hospital scene with everyone else involved. I'm still eventually hoping for the perspective of some "outsider" like some random internet hacker or SCT fan when news of all of this leaks. I've got a feeling that when rumor turns to facts it won't be received well.

It's funny how Viv went from a character I largely liked to one of those I like the least over time. I'm all for characters making mistakes and then learning from them. You get good character growth there a lot of the time. Viv though just keeps making the same mistake over and over, sees the consequences every time, and just keeps at it. That she seemingly got rewarded for it doesn't help though it may be counteracted by the consequences here. I didn't realize Dent did this all completely off the books like she did. She's liable to lose her job or get discharged over this though I could see Central pulling strings. Granted we know she didn't want to do it but was seemingly told to by the MIND but I doubt that helps things. I must imagine she underestimated just how stupid Viv would be. The biggest irony would be if this causes Viv to get removed from the team both from a perspective of her condition and for breach of trust with the team.
