*cracks knuckles* OK SO (a lot of cool options have been brought up already so i'm just gonna throw in some maybe lesser-known ones) Rakshasa/Rakshasi: Beings from Hindu or Buddhist mythology that typically look like humans with fangs and claws (and often red hair?) who do things like eat people. Shapechangers and/or illusionists. Cons: look pretty human, unless you take some fun artistic license to 'em. Gandaberunda: Also from Hindu mythology, a giant bird with two heads (and sometimes a peacock tail!) big enough to carry away elephants Hellhounds: ok these are pretty well known Geryon and/or Gegenees: Two Greek mythology instances of giants with too many extra body parts. Six arms, three heads, extra torsos and legs. Gashadokuro: Japanese yokai. Giant skeletons! I just realised I'm throwing in a lot of giant creatures here for some reason.

Circumstances provide a lot of hooks.. where was the critter the moment before it became relevant in the story? What makes today different from last week? What is it fighting for? What will it absolutely *not* do? What main character do you want to spotlight, what trait do you want to show, and how can the monster be the polar opposite of that?

If it something down with the cave elves: bio-luminescent serpent, frog, jellyfish, regularfish, or something. If it is something that poses riddles: manticore, gargoyle, dragon, or sphynx are all classics. If it's a familiar: definitely cat-like or dragon-like (I'm not prejudiced, really.). If it's a door guardian: gargoyles or chinese lions. If it's a random critter they fight, anything on the list but make it beastly by crossing it with a non-animal (crystals, minerals, fungus, etc.). The interesting thing I find about your list is that they ALL fit into both the "knowledgeably ally" or "dark, monster nemesis to defeat" subtypes, so it's difficult to answer without knowing what you need them for. (Edited to rephrase my tired brain.)

Depending on the circumstances in the story, you could go with an Amarok, That's a giant wolf in Inuit mythology. Unlike most wolves, the Amarok hunts alone. They stalk and devour those who hunt alone at night. Having the crew stalked by a giant wolf would lend really nice tension to the narrative.

Honestly, all of these sound awesome, but can you imagine the *SPARKLE* attacks of a glow troll??? How hilarious/terrifying/beautiful would that be???
