FYI, there are 3 main groups (denominations) of Mennonites in the US. Culturally, 1 group is just slightly more "liberal" than the Amish, 1 group lives pretty much modern lives, and the other group is in the middle. Many (not all) people in the most conservative group follow the disciplinary teachings of Michael Pearl.....which are monstrous. Pearl claims his disciplinary methods are perfectly safe, but there have been deaths in the US, of children beaten to death by their parents (with the parents testifying at trial that they were just following Michael's teachings, and didn't think they would really harm their child.) Michael's wife, Debi, has written a marriage book for women, which is also has horrible teachings (even by conservative "women must always obey" standards.) Debi teaches that a woman must never leave her husband, even if he is having inappropriate relations with the children. She also teaches there are only 3 types of men, and the best way for a woman to manipulate, er "support" her husband, once she finds out what type of man she is married to. It may not have been brought up in the trial, but I would guess he grew upwith bad physical abuse, and emotional manipulation and abuse. Maybe even "inappropriate relationship" abuse. The Pearl's books are sold on Amazon, even though there have been protests about them. Pearl's child training books are literal manuals for child abuse (For example, he says parents need to start "switching" their children at the age of 6 months, and that children should be switched until they stop crying (which is where deaths have occurred, parents have literally switched or spanked their child to death, because they never stopped crying.) It's really horrific stuff.

Childhood trauma? Maybe. But I heard a different explanation from Daniel Thompson on Netflix's I Am a Stalker. Thompson clearly had very poorly developed 'theory of mind', kind of a toddler mentality in a grown man's body. He explained his stalking his ex-girlfriends by saying he had a difficulty with 'detachment'. When he was emotionally involved with someone,he couldn't detach. Only with violence, i.e., knives and strangulation, could he 'detach' from his rejecting girlfriends. This kind of hit home for me. That there are a lot of these immature, grown-up toddlers out there who can only resolve their anger to their own satisfaction with an act of violence.

Extremely tragic! What a piece of shit! But what I'm thinking is that he must have experienced some specific trauma caused by one woman, or more, in the Mennonite church when he was growing up. Maybe his mother was abusive and used the church's teachings as a way of scalding him and justify her actions against him? Therefore he took out his anger and resentment on a Mennonite woman, that he used as a sort of effigy of his mother (or whatever woman/women that was mean to him). Maybe...

My parents lived in Farmington for some time. I visited. Interesting community. Unfortunately, they were robbed while my mom was in the hospital for heart surgery. Stole everything…heartbreaking. It’s sad this young woman lost her life to this monster. I understand the disdain for pain you experienced, but why take it out on another person. What did she do? God bless her and her family.
