Thanks for covering Grace the way she deserved, Mike. I was appalled at the amount of slut-shaming, & victim blaming in the media at the time, & it was completely overblown. Besides, she could have been as hardcore as she wanted, because nobody consents to be murdered. He's an evil POS, with a POS defence (just call the police if it truly was an 'accident'...GTFO lying twat). I'm just glad he's off the streets, he can't hurt anyone else & his name is out there. After this case, I completely re-examined how I approached internet dating, which we should all do, if we're using it, & that's a good thing...it's just a shame Grace's life had to be taken in order for it to become clearer. It was great that the Prime Minister Ms Arden spoke on her behalf. Due to heinous of this crime and his previous offences, that even though he was given a minimum sentence where he could technically be released, he will be incarcerated for life. The parole board will never let him out given all this.

He'll spend more than 17 years in jail because a shit like that will never admit his guilt, which one must do to qualify for parole. Plus he'll to do anger management and anti-violence courses, and he'll refuse to do that. The psychologist's report won't help him either. NZ has strict name supression rules which are out of touch with other countries. Even though NZ reporters couldn't identify him, the UK press did, so NZers could just google 'Grace Millane UK' and get his name. Dunno if it's a NZ thing, but Grace's case is the third high profile sex-related trial I know of where the women are excoriated and humiliated by the defence, and the judges seem to let them. So that had better change.

He did use a butcher's knife in an assault on his live in gf at the time but the coroner's report doesn't mention any cuts or anything. I need to know why that room lit up like that when in the crime scene photos the bed linens are pristine white and the report said this : A pathologist who explained how she died told a jury she was strangled and had bruises on her arms and chest "consistent" with being pinned down. Dr Simon Stables said considerable force would have been required, and the pressure on her neck must have lasted between four and five minutes to be enough to kill her.

NZ sentencing is annoying (speaking as a NZer), but like other countries 17yrs is when he can apply for parole, not the entirety of his sentence - I whole heartedly agree it isn’t enough but given the psychologist report and multiple convictions, it is likely that when he applies for parole he will get a preventative detention sentence applied which means unless he somehow gets deemed ‘safe’ (unlikely) he will not be getting out in 17 years or for a long time after that.
