The subject of what happened was never really brought up, as Asriel never wanted to discuss it. They don't know the whole story of how Chara purposefully poisoned themself so they and Asriel could cross the barrier. (Alphys knows though, because she's seen the tapes.)

This scene proves that this comic needs to be more recognized by people. Toriel tries endlessly to comfort her long-lost son, Asriel can't even fathom a moment his family is split, and Frisk just watches at the conflict, knowing that they can't fix this one problem. It's so sad but yet so good! I LOVE IT! Oh yeah. Happy 50th Page!
