Later that day the boys were chatting while they waited for Mr. Phillips to arrive. “What is that noise?” Steven blurted out in the middle of a conversation about Apex Legends. Dillion coughed, he sounded horrible, he definitely was coming down with something, “I think it’s that air conditioner back there.” Dillion muttered with an obvious stuffy nose. Steven got up from his desk to check it out, on the back counter hidden out of sight was the machine. It looked like it was emitting some kind of pink steam. “Fancy air conditioner.” Steven muttered. As he touched the machine a shock went through his entire body. He was stunned for a second, but nobody seemed to notice as the boys continued their conversation on. As Steven wobbled back to his seat, he felt wobbly and different, but he couldn’t really describe how he felt to anyone if he had to, he didn’t fell bad… just… different.
The door burst open, the guys quickly sat up in their seats as they thought it was Mr. Phillips, but instead Mr. Thompson entered the room. He pointed straighted at Steven, “Rockford, get your ass over here now.” Mr. Thompson sniffed as he caught a whiff of the room. The wary Steven wobbled from his chair as the rest of the guy’s smirked as Mr. Thompson looked pissed. The rest of the class didn't really like Steven and Dillion, the two thought they were better than the rest of the kids in the class, simply because they wern’t such big nerds. Steven moped out into the hallway where he saw Hannah, she looked cute in a tight pastel pink sweater dress, other than she had her hands on her hips and looked mad at Steven. It was weird, when Steven looked at Hannah at first he didn’t know who she was, but as soon as they made eye contact, memories of their interactions flooded into his head. “Ms. Rodgers here informed me you took her perfume out of her locker.” Mr Thompson crossed is arms and gave Steven a death stare. Steven rolled his eyes, “Why would I steal someone’s perfume?” Hannah rolled her eyes back at Steven, “I see it in your pocket Steven look!” Steven’s eye’s widened as he felt a glass bottle in his pocket, he slowly handed it back to Hannah with shame, “I’m sorry I must have accidentally grabbed it.” He said defeated. Hannah rolled her eyes, and remained with her arms crossed, “It’s fine… just totally weird.” She flipped her hair and walked into class leaving Steven awkwardly alone with Mr. Thompson.
Steven was ready for one of the worst verbal assaults of his life, he was scared of Mr. Thompson, and Mr. Thompson knew it too. What person wasn’t scared of Mr Thompson, the 6’ 3” middle aged man was jacked, he had to be on roids, which didn’t surprise Steven with how much he yelled. “Rockford, you are such a screw up. One of the worst students I’ve ever taught. By far.” Mr. Thompson came out swinging right away. “Look Mr. Thompson I swear I’m trying… I just can’t same to please you.” Mr Thompson snarled and grabbed Steven’s shirt pulling him close to his face, he was going to yell something about being a sad excuse for man, but he was distracted by something in Steven’s eyes. It wasn’t anything actually, just his gorgeous blue eyes. Mr. Thompson let go of Steven’s shirt quickly, “Your eyes are magnificent.” Steven shook his head to make sure he was hearing correctly, “Uh what” Steven said nervously. Mr. Thompson gave him a warm smile, “Hey Steven listen, I actually didn’t give you a fair shot. Do you want to meet after class to discuss things?” Steven’s first instinct was hell no, he didn’t want to meet this raging old douche after class on his free time. But the more he thought about it, the more sincere Mr. Thompson sounded, and it wouldn’t hurt to improve his relationship with us roided up gym teacher, Steven warmly smiled back, “Sure Mr. Thompson.” Mr. Thompson reached out and rubbed Steven’s arm. “Awesome! I will pick you up at 6:30 tomorrow night! Oh and he you can call me Jim sweetheart!” Steven nervously smiled, “Did Mr. Thompson mean a date with him? Sweetheart?” Steven had every right to run to Mr. Mutalo’s office, but he didn’t. Why? He couldn’t put his finger on it. The more he thought about it, the more he liked Mr. Thompson’s alpha attitude, in fact, he adored it.
Eric Weldman casually strolled last the daydreaming boy in the hall and into Mr. Phillips room. He’d gotten a repair request about a faulty A/C unit. The 31 year old school maintenance worker was just glad to be working. It was hard to lock down a job as a maintenance worker with little experience, but school took a chance on him, and he couldn’t be happier. The 240 pound man had a gnarly beer gut, which he usually attributed to Sunday’s in which he spent his entire day drinking beer and on his recliner. He hadn’t had a girlfriend since he’d dropped out of college 8 years ago, but it was whatever, he took his sad life day by day.
As he peaked in the class he saw Mr. Phillips at his desk preparing to start class. “Hey Adam” He said reaching out to shake his hand. “Mr. Phillips, who was a friend to everyone warmly smiled and shook his hand, “Yeah so this machine is being super loud and puffing some kind of pink smoke. I think it’s busted for sure.” Adam put his hand on his chin and scratched it, “Hmmm.. I’ve never seen something like this before! I’ll take a look Adam!” Mr Phillips smiled, “Thanks Eric no worries if you are too loud.”
