All This for Ten Dollars - Habbo Hotel
🕑 Added 2025-09-09 23:23:58 +0000 UTCMLYP takes us through a brief overview of Habbo Hotel and its (occasionally unfortunate) relationships with Something Awful, 4chan, and the rest of the internet.

I understand MLYP needing to step back due to his day job. But how does the quality go so down going from his independent pod to having "the resources" of Kill the Computer?

It's been a while but there was a local news story about someone putting the "Pool's Closed" meme on the gate to an apartment swimming pool. Someone went to take their kids/grandkids to the pool and were convinced it was a racist attack on the community. "Ironic" racism, indeed.

I grew up on Roblox, and it's kind of the Wild West. Watching ERPs happen in front of you when you're 14 is crazy, and that was 14 years ago. In fact, it was kind of an open secret among players that there WERE pedophiles on the game, and you WOULD eventually run into one, so best be careful. Games on Roblox are all siloed off from the main game, and while supposedly those games would have an Admin Status, that was often just a purchasable rank on that particular Game, and it carried basically no power except overpowered items in the Game. As such, it was and in a lot of ways still is just COMPLETELY unmoderated, with even a basic profanity filter only coming in to the global infrastructure of the game in 2016, if memory serves

Thanks for the clarification!

GETs and trips were two different things. GETs were when a post managed to have a "special" ID #, e.g. post number 16000000 was actually a habbo hotel related GET. People tend to spam post in an attempt to have their post be the GET when the post IDs approach GET territory, which used to cause the servers to crash. The best GETs are the ones that happened authentically/accidentally rather than the ones people tried to get, IMHO. A trip is the "password" you could enter to lock in a username before your post instead of the default Anonymous. IIRC trips were turned off on /b/ for everyone except mods eventually, but before they were, you were considered lesser if you used them. Anonymous was superior, trips were lame.
