Regarding Ariana’s speaking voice, she actually is speaking in a protective/safe manner- but maybe tweaking it a little. The breathiness comes from a raised soft pallet and forward seated tongue, that keeps the airway open. If you watch opera singers speak, you’ll see a lot of them with this voice. It sometimes comes off as British or snooty sounding, but it’s really just speaking in the singing position.
