David Chen needs to make a child and grow out of being a child.

They left a few dangling threads to continue the story but I’d be disappointed if it was solely about Jason again.

What does everyone think of darkmatter being renewed? It seems to continue the trend of bizarre season 2 renewals for shows that seemed like they concluded having covered their source material. (Other shows with surprise renewal, Presumed Innocent and Shogun)

Alec Rodriguez

I've seen Cory Yuen's works over the decades and didn't know his name nor was I familiar with his game👀 Coincidentally before learning of his passing I saw a 35mm print of DOA at Nitehawk Cinema a few months back, and I have tix to a 35mm screening of SO CLOSE at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn next month.

For me, here's the biggest irony of the film and video game remasters. Back in the day, we forgave a lot of visual limitations because the strength of the storytelling. Now, we're doing our best to forgive the visual CLARITY because of the strength of the storytelling. How the tables have turned. And to be clear, in my opinion, part of what works about those old movies and games is the visual "shortcomings". They gave the film a personality. Everything looked unique and nuanced and quirky. But now, the smoothed out remasters are a little like when Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame got her larger than average nose reduced down to a quote unquote normal size... And suddenly found that one of her most distinct and recognizable features was gone. She did an interview and said something like, "Suddenly I discovered I looked like everyone else... and I hated it. Nobody knew who I was anymore."

Chris Cameron

I believe you mean “Joaq-off”

Alien looks so distinct because it’s an anamorphic presentation shot at 100 ISO, there’s so much more information to get off the negative with that wonderful fresh scan for the 4K. Aliens is shot super 35 which is a much smaller image on grainy 400 ISO film. There’s less to work with. Doing a fresh scan of that negative would let him do a better job instead of putting the same old 2k scan through the AI process.

April Reid

For me the issue with the Cameron remasters is less to do with excessive DNR but to do with using AI and not going back to the original camera negative. You wanna take all the grain out of the 400T film in Aliens? Sure go off but at least work from a brand new scan instead of using AI.

"Who is James Cameron to lecture me on grain structure! We'll see who gets the last laugh when my Avatar 3 review comes out!"

When I read that James Cameron article I immediately pictured David reading it and slowly taking his glasses off in shock at this direct attack on him

You three NEED to see Sing Sing. I have a good feeling it’ll end up being in your Top 10’s of 2024, and it could very well win Best Picture next year.
