Just a comment on Buffy: that show always read to me like the masturbation fantasy for every bullied nerd in HS. In the show, Joss Whedon's avatar is Xander, a bullied nerd with few friends, until one day this super hot girl appears, who otherwise would be the most popular girl in school, but because of her vampire thing, is forced to seek out the nerd and befriend him. This draws other hot girls into the nerd's orbit and now his life is awesome. It's really not hard to see why bullied nerds everywhere fell in love with that show. It's also not difficult to see who Joss Whedon ultimately turned out to be once he was unmasked.

Just thinking to myself, would it be better if Dave closed the show with, "It's impressive that ____ made THIS movie," instead of "a movie"? It's likely just me that feels this way, but I nearly always cringe at the thought that a new listern might take the context of that closing statement the wrong way.

Who could have predicted a fresh outpouring of love for Satoshi Kon now that a certain podcast is covering his works? (I enjoy Blank Check—and love Kon—but the timing is making my eyes roll, sorry!) Edit: I miss when movie fandom felt like we would all discover any variety of films at differing times; now it feels like many wait for Griffin & David to do it for them on a schedule. I have found this to be widespread, so I do not mean to target anyone in the Filmcast sphere. That said, I’m all for a broader appreciation of Kon, making any point I had moot.

So excited to hear Dave talk about Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Also +1 to the recommendations for Millennium Actress, with an added PASSIONATE recommendation for Kon's lesser seen film, Tokyo Godfathers. It's SO GOOD.

We've been through this! 😭😂 "Despite Beneath the Planet of the Apes ending in a way that seemed to prevent the series from continuing, 20th Century-Fox still wanted a sequel. Roddy McDowall, in the franchise documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes, stated that Arthur P. Jacobs sent Beneath screenwriter Paul Dehn a telegram concerning the sequel that read 'Apes exist, Sequel required.'" And believe me, they found a way 😂

As a general rule, the first films in famous horror series are Actual Good Movies. Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Night of the Living Dead…all great. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is incredible. The glaring exception IMO is Friday the 13th. None of them are especially good, and feel like also-rans chasing a trend. Jeff is right, the hockey mask is iconic and works well but otherwise it’s a crass excuse to titillate kids with sex and violence
