the sand displacing when the worm is near reminds me a lot of the famous glass of water from Jurassic Park. Elegant visual shorthand to convey scale and tension without actually showing it

In the novel it is explained that the reason why they don’t use laser weapons is that if they hit the shields, it causes a reaction that results in a huge explosion. This is why they fight with bladed melee weapons.
