Unfortunately I feel like the big issues with most musical biopics today, and this one is no exception, is that to get to use the music in the film, you must get the approval of the artist's estate/family, and that means a heavily sanitized version of the person, with all the controversy sanded off. This movie, just like many others, completely elided much of the controversy that existed, and instead presents the view that Bernstein's children wanted put out there. Unfortunately if you want to be honest in telling the story of these famous musicians, you'll have to do so without any of their music being used, just like in Priscilla. There's a lot of interesting things out there about Leonard Bernstein, and could have made for a fascinating character study, but instead we got this hollow film. Maestro to me felt much more like Bradley Cooper's testament to his own perceived genius than to Leonard Bernstein at all. It was one of the more awkward vanity projects I've seen in recent years, and I really hope Cooper gets over himself before his next film. All the Oscar love is probably not going to help with that though, unfortunately.

I'm actually surprised David loved this movie given his disdain of biopics. I wonder what this film did differently enough to make it far from what he hates about biopics.
