I am going insane: "Pinto" is not a spanish term for beans, in context is a horse with a multicoloured coat

Kate

my mom's first car was literally a green ford pinto called "the pickle"

Kate

why did i buy the kia soul in 2022? because it was in stock and i didn't have to ship it to get it. the honda civic was backordered to hell.

Kate

i grew up helping my dad fix up project cars. he found so many old triumph convertibles in barns in rural pa, and this is why i know how to read a wiring diagram and how to rebuild an engine.

fyermind

I was a problematic three year old. I have been told I debated a lawyer after christmas service around whether having "in god we trust" on US currency is a violation of the separation of church and state. I was on the side of "everyone knows what god it refers to, this is an obvious violation."

I expected ford to be shat on for the Pinto. I had no idea though that the message to go away with was “the pinto was bad, but so many cars are way worse and no one talks about it”. So much of the Pinto controversy was just how well the (valid) outrage was marketed, quite interesting.

Off-label Botanist

I would wear a shirt with the cartoon versions of themselves (any)

Russell Johnson

I had a ‘74 Pinto wagon. It could either go uphill, or have air conditioning, but not both. And I lived in Arizona. But at least the wagon was not a known firebomb waiting to happen.

DarksStars

I know objectively that modern cars are safer, but by god does the Pinto cruiser wagon f*cks

Patrick Kearney

Victoria saying "It made me a better person to fix up an old shitty car but it's also self harm" is something I feel in my soul. I have a scar on my wrist that was a love bite from my shitty 1977 Celica I had in 2007

Algor Langeaux

I applaud this primarily because it will allow people born after 1970 will understand the Pinto joke when watching "Top Secret".

"I am the GM Mentat" did make me specifically laugh, thank you

Warmachine

The fact that the Aero-Gavin was created in Pinto form blows my goddamn mind.

Lesley

It's the only thing in the YT description. The only thing. I love these guys

Nyx the Menace

You said you had merch...but you didn't post the link to it anywhere

Porpoise Power

I'd argue that a peanut is a bean and not a nut.

Kevin Brighton

You did!

Kevin Brighton

You delivered on the audio only so now I can listen on CarPlay during my commute. Thanks!

trainboy

Please have Victoria back on and/or Ralph Nader on to talk about the Ford Explorer Firestone tire debacle.

Week Beecher

Just a little guy

Jason Gano

Please look at doing an episode on the construction management failure of Washington nuclear facility WNP-3 and WNP-5. Biggest bond failure in US history. (Or the Tacoma narrows bridge collapse)

Mae Berens

when i worked for the circus that barnes and noble in bakersfield was a life saver since it was in walking distance to the trainyard so i could load up on books and dvds because i didn't have the internet

HHH

smol bean car manufacturers

Danial

I see, thank you so much

Aj Curtis

I think it may have just been a tangent on the oldsmobile diesel episode but I'm not positive

Cate Kneale

The Subaru 360 is adorable! I would buy it a little house and a blanket to tuck it up at night.

AnIconic Dog

Please yes to the episode on pedestrian fatalities~

Robert P

There was a VW episode for is she just mixing it up with the other car centered episodes?

Robert S

My main association with AMC is Wayne's world where the communal pacer, the mirthmobile, is a symbol of joy

Patrick Lopez

I'm carsick just thinking about it

Brian Danger Hicks

My uncle got a really good deal on a Corvair once. Because Nader's book had just come out and he hadn't heard about it.

Brian Azevedo

You haven’t really lived until you’ve ridden around in the back seat of your grandmother’s Pinto on a Southern California freeway at 45 miles per hour because “nobody needs to go any faster than that.”

Hedrigal

You forgot to include the link to shirts.

Jon W

No Via!

Liz and Ash in Florida. It's very hot! Climate change will kill us all.

Wanna put that Cruising livery on my old silver Ranger

Kivome

Hey when is this dropping on the podcast feed? Listening to YouTube on background is a pain in my massive bum and yes I know about NewPipe. Also same question for the fashion episode.

PeaceUpToesDown

This is my favorite episode so far. Straight up. I wonder what November would think of the AMC Marlin, and I wish you would have touched on the dual single-carb set up of the Corvair. Corvairs fucking rule and I can tune one by ear and they give me life. Do an episode on defunct features that were way ahead of their time, like auto-dimming Chevy headlights from the fifties! Gimme that sweet, sweet prismatic technology, baby!

Mutual Aid Miniatures

AMC Ruled. The Eagle is the best looking wagon ever made.

Please please add this to the rss feed. I can’t watch YouTube in my car

Cate Kneale

Nothing hotter than a cars seats after it had been sat in the sun in the 70s and 80s

GabrielClyde

given the horse theme I think it needs to be the van for the hay team.

Jane Doe

The pandemic is still ongoing. Please check wastewater readings (eg. on biobot); the second highest peak since the original omicron peak of 2021/22 just passed. Saying "after the pandemic" is incredibly alienating for the people -- people who are currently able-bodied and trying to shield themselves from the ravages of COVID-19, people who have "vulnerable" loved ones who don't want them dead, and disabled people who can't afford to become more disabled -- who still rightly care about COVID.

Porpoise Power

My favorite Kei car is the AZ-1. although... there are some Kei Camper's I'd also love to have

GabrielClyde

Hey, not the Clydesdales!!!!!!

Asher Miller

W00t!

Kacey Riley

Unit Cost - $200,000 per death is such a grim fucking line of text

Mara

I volunteer to be the "shows up to your house to make sure your recording setup works at gunpoint" person. Honestly I could probably get it to work without a gun and an audi. But I'd really like the gun and the audi. Maybe we could compromise on an airsoft gun and a volvo?

Jake Zydek

Do El Camino next

Jamie Evenstar

I love having my prejudice against American cars (and my love of cheap, effective Asian imports) validated. I am not a car person, but I've always had the worst time with Chevies and Fords and hate them because of that.

E Ling

In college a professor when on a tirade (which, admittedly I wasnt listening to) about how he would not tolerate students being on their phones during his lectures, while I frantically tried to pull up they syllabus on my phone from the front row. I feel you So Hard

Angelo J Sibilio

I have been accused at multiple jobs of being on my phone in zoom meetings because I was handwriting notes. They wouldn’t believe me until I held up the notebook.

Brian Danger Hicks

My mom had the Levi's Gremlin. The main problem was the metal rivets in the seats would get insanely hot if it was parked in the sun. Well, that and the doors would fall off, but I don't think that was denim-related.

Jamison Moore

Pretty sure the 'Sports Accent Group' at Ford is, in fact, part of MACV-SOG

David Kawabata

AMCs are hot.

Brendan McAleer

Denim Gemlin good. AMC Hornet X Gucci Sportabout even better.

David Kawabata

Nice first manga experience, Victoria!

Esteban

I'm so tired & hungover that it took me a few minutes before realizing I was watching the trailer & not the actual episode. Fuck tax day. I do love that Victoria is back & told us of Soichiro Honda's epic W against GM.

ValdVin

The magnesium alloy fire thing was actually in the Le Mans episode.

Aaron Sawdey

What’s missing from that Civic is the rust. My stepdad had a ‘76 and there were actual holes in the top of the front fenders after two Illinois winters. Otherwise, 5-speed, 76 hp, and 1500 lbs .. it was a blast to drive.

Matt

There needs to be one about the psychotic Protestant company town/forced labor camp that Ford built in the Brazilian jungle.

Zach Barrett

8:47???????

Andy

good to look at, bad to be inside of

Jason Young

Holy fuck! There's a Pinto wagon with the sports stripes for sale in Morgantown, PA. For $11,500 fucking dollars!

Will Sundstrom

Someone here has to know which TF episode it was when they went through all the homophobic car names, I can't find it for the life of me!

Joyous Uwu

How could you forget the Fiat Cannellini?

Benjamin t Malik

WEN RCR

Philip Brooks

Are you going to be nice to this friendshaped car......

Sea Hutch

It's in the Oldsmobile episode (133), I think in the chapter "Context: CAFE and Efficient 70s Cars"

Erin Mallette

I looked up the AMC Jremlin™️ and it is infact just as glorious as Victoria made it sound

Doug King

November is wrong about how Ralph got his money. He got it from the defamation suit he won against GM.

Lauren Shear

I've always thought of these (and VW Beetles and Citroens) as cars that are shaped like friends. Though this one's less friend, more like your fucknut buddy.

Man, I Got Nothing

Joke’s on you: my mom bought a Chevy Nova in the 70’s and then in the 80’s my family had a fucking Renault Encore in NJ.

Maruad

Is Ken Dryden (Canadian Senator and HoF goalie) the most famous of Nader's Raiders?

Morkon_Mo

a bean got me to join the Patreon.

Doug King

Waiting for the discussion of how really awful the Vega was. A car that flew in the face of different expansion rates of metal. The aluminum head would expand and break the gasket seal with the magnesium alloy block. Good job! Also magnesium alloys burn really really hot when they catch on fire .

RBK

I can't wait to finally find out what that suspension was for!

MI

I understand but fuck cars.

Vince Whitacre

Funny thing is, I cried about my parents trading in the Pinto for it... the Bobcat was just the Mercury version of the Pinto.

Maxi

Having a car called a bobcat just sounds wrong - a bobcat is a small front end loader in my brain and nothing else^^

Charlie Lightning

Bean there done that

Pedro Pires

much like star wars character "Count Dooku", this car would have to change its name before being sold in Brazil. Count Dooku would translate to "Count of Butthole" and Ford Pinto would translate to "Ford Cock". I mean, it rules, but it wouldn't sell

Bobby Siecker

Ecce currus, qui est faba.

TMoney2007

I see what you did there.

Noblesse Oblahaj

A crash in this car sends you where no man has bean before

GoGoGadget360

that's quite a hot take

LightningwingDragon

You guys must really like Ford

TMoney2007

Nothing counteracts the biting cold of a Michigan winter like literally being on fire...

Vince Whitacre

Oh shit, no - it was a Vega, not a Nova.

Jacob Serafin

Haven't gotten that far but I'm only 26 and trying to get their my friend

GoGoGadget360

my gf had a new Pinto as her first car and she said she loved it as a car - she lived in Michigan and said it did super well in the wind and snow and hated the whole "whoops you'll die" thing since she thought it ended up killing an otherwise great car

Ansel Leeds

The car that kills you instantly

Sam

Shane Pinto plays hockey for the Ottawa Senators from Ottawa Ontario

Sam Hood

"Going through 10mm wrenches like most people go through pens" hits so f'ing hard.

Vince Whitacre

We had a Nova before the Pinto, but I don't remember it.

Vince Whitacre

The first car I remember my parents having was a green Pinto. I cried when they replaced it with a Mercury Bobcat.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

I don't think they'd want people "from the industry." They'd want someone organizing coffee farmers to fight enslavement by American coffee companies.

BrunchMonster

Fxcking love you all!

Kelvin

I hope it blows up

Danial

You talked about how there is a vw beatle episode but I can't find it at all :(

SewingandSnakes

This is the American equivelent of the back seat of a 1980s volvo which has been parked outside in the south of france for 6 hours without any shade because your mum thinks the free car sunglasses for the windscreen are 'tacky and too french'.

Steph

There was a very similar scenario where instead of exploding when rear-ended, the Bronco II could be rolled over at 25 mph, but it never went to court, because the documents were stored in the "round filing bin"

when I was a little kid, a neighbor (that I didn't know) had a Pinto parked in front of their house. I used to walk up to it and stare inside, wondering about this deadly car they were now stuck with. One time they caught me and called out to me, and I was super-embarassed

Madeline Hunter

Blessings and gratitude unto Devon, for getting this out so fast!

Fauxpinky

This car brings up chilling, heartbreaking memories from my childhood, but thank you anyway.

Jacob Serafin

On bean realted things if the pod decides to do an episode about coffee please contact me I have over 10 years in the industry and I know the ins and ours of the buiss ess and what I don't know I'll learn

Trash Gordon

Here I was thinking it'd be about the history of Coffee
