Since Justin raised early Christian churches, let me tell you about the oldest Christian artefact in Australia (and probably the southern hemisphere). In the bottom drawer of locked filing cabinet in a disused toilet down a flight of stairs behind a door marked ‘beware of the leopard’ at the Australian War Memorial you can find what is apparently the most valuable piece of art in Australia. You won’t find it mentioned in any of the guides or brochures at the War Memorial. To find it you need to ask one of the attendants, because to get to it you need to pass through a warren of rooms and through a small opening between two display cabinets that contain Victoria Crosses. The information panel is decidedly modest in its description. You can tell that people want to keep knowledge about it as quiet as possible. So, what is it? In 1917, the Allies captured Beersheba in Palestine from the Ottomans. A group of Australian soldiers discovered that Ottoman entrenchments had uncovered a previously unknown archeological site - a tile mosaic floor of a very early (200 - 300 CE) Christian church. The floor was mostly intact and clearly very significant, so the Australians decided it would look rather nice above the fireplace at home and ripped that f@cker up. It was eventually given to the War Memorial, which should have returned what was something of immense importance that had been illegally looted. But no, the War Memorial would rather keep that sweet, sweet mosaic by making sure as few people know about it as possible. I’ve seen it, and it is indeed lovely.

Also, you wanna talk about Victorian era restorations in French Cathedrals, it's good to note that they also rebuilt a lot of the organs as well. There was This DudeTM called Aristide Cavaille-Coll, who was employed by various Napoleons to rebuild just about every cathedral organ in France, with some truly spectacular results. I own an 8 hour documentary about his life and works if you ever want to watch, but you'd need some good earphones. The long and the short of it was that he made organs into like massive technical marvels that both sound good, and can easily fill the huge spaces of these big dumb cathedrals. He drew up plans for an organ in St Peter's, Rome, but it never got built. It was like 150 registers, just to deal with the sheer volume of the building.

When I was a child I was told by someone in the entourage of the Episcopal Arch Bishop of New York that a cathedral was essentially like the Air Force One of churches. Wherever the Bishop and cathedra (the seat) were was the cathedral.

If you wanted an actual cathedral version of Justin’s dad’s church, you could have talked about the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh. It’s a recent build, and looks a lot like that other church, only a lot bigger. It actually has reclaimed stained glass too, but from Philadelphia. It’s a totally value engineered church because they didn’t raise anywhere near enough money to build the fancier first design. Raleigh used to have the smallest cathedral in the Continental United States, and now it has the most McMansion-y one.
