I watched the Empty Man after your initial pitch (I listened to the discussion after having seen it) and while I don't felt like I wasted my time, I actually kind of enjoyed it, I also think that it wasn't that special. To me it have the same feel and sort of plot like The Wicker Man. Overall it was an enjoyable experience but I have already forgotten most of the movie.
