I’m so late and this is my first time ever commenting, but I started listening to an ADDPOD last year, I finished campaign one, I’ve started campaign 2, and Trinyvale, i’m running The Sunless Citadel right now for a group of coworkers. And when I was listening to episode one of this, I realize that it was The Sunless Citadel and I’m really happy that I started listening to this podcast, I didn’t think that I could adapt the story to my own image. I wish I had done that Jake you are awesome!

I had wondered the same thing. I just listened to the episode for a second time: when they leave the blacksmith Jake clarifies that their business there is concluded, which implies all their swords have been returned and some amount of time has passed. I think that means that their weapons have been all rendered +1 and the smith paid for his labours.

I love how all three characters are so different but so narratively complimentary. Willie has only ever served a deity, Sudrick has only ever served paying warlords, and Boggy has only ever served himself. Willie’s adherence to an inward-looking religion has rendered her naïve but hopeful. Sudrick’s service to whichever cause paid him the most has rendered him experienced but cynical. And then there’s Boggy, who realised that the only way to really feel joy in this grimdark world was to serve yourself. But in finding joy with his merry band of bandits, Boggy also rendered himself vulnerable to the worst heartbreak of all: valuing something real only to lose it. Even though he’s so merry and blithe, he’s as grimdark as the rest. I’m sure when Willie and Sudrick are sleeping in the mornings, Boggy gets up, walks off to a nearby brook, and smokes from a pipe and, just for a moment, hears his old buds playing the lute and dancing in the woods.

If you guys haven't read T.H. White's The Once and Future King, I must recommend it with my whole heart. The King Arthur story almost in the style of an early 20th century boy's boarding school/training montage. Very readable but also doesn't shy from the sorrow and the mysticism of Morte D'Arthur. Also Tom Bombadil gets on my fucking nerves, I'm sorry, I know I'm in the minority, my whole family is against me on this and covers me with shame and mockery. But I know a theater kid when I see one, even if he's immortal and high powered.

Bright Sword is good and all but if you have not read Don Quixote yet it fits so well with this vibe. Edith Grossman’s translation is really accessible and there is a great audiobook version of it narrated by George Guidall. My usual selling point for this book is the chapter where Sancho laboriously tries to poop whilst holding onto the reigns Quixote’s horse while Quixote is riding it. Sancho thinks he can do it without being noticed.
