[Skaldova spoilers] Came back here from the future to say that I think Jake could really like the Call of Cthulhu system; it’s very intuitive for low-magic fantasy. Skaldova easily could have been a Call of Cthulhu mini campaign. Cults, old magic artefacts, and experimental drugs derived from dead gods are common plot devices in the universe. There’s even a pre-built campaign (can’t remember the name; sorry!) that I GM’ed ages ago that centres around a pitch-black drug derived from an Old God’s blood that’s being sold by a cult to university students.

If you did do an mtg mixed bag, it could be fun to build decks for each person based on their characters. Like Jake playing Jorn, God of Winter because Calder is snow/ice themed, Moonshine is elves tribal or hugs, Jens is a fight deck because he challenges people to duels, etc… Could even have Caldwell make proxy art for the commanders so they are the characters but have the cards abilities! (Like the Godzilla cards in the Ikoria set)

It sounds like you guys should try "Monster of the Week" as a potential new system it's a very simple D6 system that focuses heavily on RP and story telling that's incredibly easy to learn and each player class is built around the idea of a different horror stereotype

Re: Call of Cthulhu i feel like people make a lot of assumptions about the system but the newest edition is pretty well constructed and covers a lot of the things people are skeptical about (fraught terms like "madness" for example). Also NADDPod is literally full of players RPing being charmed or otherwise being told how to roleplay so that doesn't seem like much of an issue

I literally had to grab my phone off the counter — almost falling out of the shower, mind you — to recommend that y'all play the Shiver system!! Your character is a horror movie archetype (I was the "experiment" when I played with friends in a summer camp setting) and the system is both easy to learn and has devastating consequences if it comes to that.

There is a super fun (and funny) game called Die Laughing which is exactly what Murph described - all the player characters are horror movie archetypes. It takes about 1 to 2 hours to play and would make an amazing one shot. The game can handle 7 or 8 players easily and players take turns as the director (GM) so everyone gets to play.
