The Ever-Lovin’ Blue Eyed Thing’s rocky transformation and ROM’s metal cyborg shell made them a fun team, so I propose that Murph’s stony exterior would actually make him a better teammate to ROM than an enemy

That question has an answer: he's not a real ghost, it's a trick by the town's Gaston. This story contains no reason at all that Grinch was ineffectual. It's incompatible with the fearful way he's being treated and is never even implied to have an explanation. To cite Sleepy Hollow as a good excuse for this suggests that you find both equally illogical, which is a failure to see the sense in Sleepy.

What's so great though is how specific and siloed his intense frustration is. Like, he'll go fully OFF on his opinion, but the second someone cracks a zingy joke - even if the theme of it is in contradiction to his point, he SO easily laughs at it with FULL untainted joy. The Merlin catching a stray as old and boring was so shocking to me because I got one for Christmas in 2008, and my sister and I loved it so much we would physically fight over it. You absolutely need to read the original ROM: Space Knight. Bill Mantlo at his best. Fantastic writing with some of the best covers of the 80s. I for one am surprised that Caldwell was not familiar with it considering some of his comics knowledge. Firestorm the Nuclear Man is arguably a more niche pull.
