Charisma represents your force of will, strength of soul and your ability to exert yourself on the world. This is why it impacts both your social skills and your saves against things like banishment which directly targets the soul of a creature (which is why a creature not native to a plane can be banished forever; the plane you belong to has everything to do with where your soul is attuned). As it pertains to D&D, “Charisma” is mostly interchangeable with “Willpower.”

I dm professionally to kids, so I actually use tomato’s to explain the stats quite like you did with hot pockets: Strength: how many tomatoes can you lift. Dexterity: how accurately do you throw tomatoes, and how good are you at dodging tomatoes thrown at you. Constitution: how many rotten tomatoes can you eat without throwing up, and how many unripe tomatoes can you be hit with before you collapse. Intelligence: knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom: knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad. Charisma: the ability to convince someone to eat a fruit salad with tomatoes in it.

Charisma sort of feels like Force of Will, or Force of Spirit to me. Like, similar to the sanity/power mechanic in Call of Cthulhu, a charisma saving throw is a measure of how strong your spirit is, your sense of self, your identity, your personality. You can’t be banished easily because your sense of your place in this world is so strong and rooted that it would take serious force to drag you away from it

Speaking to the charisma conversation, I’ve personally thought for a long time that sorcerers should have their casting stat be constitution, because their magic comes from their bloodline, their literal body, but it’s technically a physical stat so wizards didn’t make it a casting modifier…. As a paladin player who is a charisma caster I’ve always thought of charisma as his force of will or personality casting magic, not necessarily hotness or ability to talk to people
