All this Beanie Baby talk reminded me of something that happened when I was a child. In the 90s/ early 2000s, my grandparents owned a small home goods store that sold home decor, candles, things of that nature. They also were an official Beanie Baby’s retailer. When new ones were released, there would be a line down the street, well before they opened, of people waiting to buy them, probably to resell. My grandparents made a killing off of it. One day, my grandmother goes to open the store and finds that they were robbed. They took every beanie baby off the shelf and all the boxes in storage. Nothing else. My grandmother suspected that my grandfather staged the break in, sold all the beanie baby’s to one person for a fuckton of cash off the books, and then filed an insurance claim to get that money as well. He denied it till the day he died, but the business wasn’t doing well and that’s why she thinks it was all planned. Just crazy to think how much money and hype was surrounding these little toys that now are gathering dust in a box in all of our parents garages.
