Of course xxx’s death was horrible but I must admit some of the tweets made by influential people that called him a huge inspiration or made him out to be an amazing person made me slightly sick after hearing you guys talk on the pod last week about all the horrible things he did. I guess it all goes back to the issue of separating th artist from their art. Just because someone is gone doesn’t mean they haven’t left damage behind or the mistakes they have made are all erased. i always have trouble with the 'separate the art from the artist' argument bc art is always personal. its the artist point of view it how that art sees the world its how the artist interacts with the world. so if the artist is a terrible person its impossible to view their art at face value bc the art is the representation of the artist. especially at a time like this when the #MeToo movement has done so much to bring terrible people to light and we are now as a society seeing that we dont have to tolerate bad people. xxx was a terrible person and the fact that he made 'good' music is irrelevant. the fact that he can pollute the world anymore is good.

I agree. I do understand the sentiment that he was young and had a hard life and lacked guidance. I completely understand that that can affect a person in a way that I can't even imagine. In the same vein though, it doesn't excuse the allegations and evidence against him that showed his flagrant homophobia and abuse. He was a very talented artist, but that doesn't mean anything to me when the source of the art and inspiration is abuse and harm to others. And who knows, maybe, had he had the opportunity to grow up, he would've learned and changed and made amends for his actions, but we can't hold him to what he could've been but to what he was. But also as people we need to realize that no one we listen to or consume media wise is perfect. No one is going to say or do the perfect things all the time. People say and do stupid shit constantly and also hold "problematic" opinions and values. People need to be given an opportunity to learn before they're "cancelled." I'm not saying abusers get a pass, though. Abusers have patterns and abuse until they have no one left to abuse. He was well on his way to being an abuser his whole life.

I don't care how talented he was and how much potential he had. Yeah, his death was tragic. But at the end of the day, he was doing bad shit and people shouldn't make excuses for that. Death doesn't make you a saint. And if you like his music, at least admit he was doing bad shit. We can't keep spinning in this circle where talent excuses inexcusable behavior. Abuse, racism, sexism, bullying, none of it matters to most people. As long as the music is good. And it's not okay. And it's the exact same for Tekashi. He shouldn't have the support that he has. Most people don't even know about his child porn history because it's just hidden and apparently irrelevant, and those who know just don't care.
