I feel like he needed help to get himself and his family out from under machine-head's thumb and recruited Mark to do it. But after MH was dethroned there was an open seat for power, like MH said the straight and narrow wasn't a realistic option for Titan anymore. So why not become the crime boss rather than the low wage stooge? I don't think that he really INTENDED for Mark to die, but when compared with what Titan had at stake it was an acceptable loss.
