I agree that’s also how I view Kane’s character especially after the episode where he showed remorse wishing he waited a day (showing how much he cares for the people of the ark and their untimely deaths) but I do understand how he does seem a bit villainous in the episodes leading up to it the culling but after I def believed it was a turning point for me seeing his POV from the earlier episodes which is actually very logical in which he came across as cold.

Oh also, yes, they did mention what happened to Earth at the very start of the series. Nuclear war which irradiated the planet. That’s why they thought the earth wasn’t surviveable yet and that’s why you see mutated animals, it’s due to the radiation.

I think there is a misinterpretation on Marcus Kane's character ( The one who was going to float abby for saving the chancellor). From what i understood this past episodes, The show kind of shows you that some characters are very complex and it is a matter of perspective on who is deemed bad or not. Kane was for the people so he did not want abby to pass the medical supply limit to save one person (Chancellor) because it could lead to the death of others and i agree with him like just because he is a chancellor does not mean they should saacrifice medical supplies and blood supplies. Also the argument that Kane was wrong for not listening to abby and sacrificing people is kind of one sided and shows that people cannot differentiate between the character's perspective and the audience perspective since we can see everything that is going on . It was mentioned multiple times that the longer they wait the more they have to sacrifice more people to save the arc and abby wanted to wait for confirmation that the kids survived. In Kane's perspective , there is no data to prove that they are alive and they dropped the kids earlier than the expected date (I think they mentioned that in episode 1 or 2 ) since there is still radiation present so in his case , he sees abby just trying to hold on to that solution because her daughter is there and sees it as delaying the inevitable as you are still going to sacrifice people. Like let's be real, if we did not see the kids survived and how they are living on earth , we will be more understanding of Kane, like just because he is stern about it does not mean he is a bad person (from the 8 episodes we have watched) . He is just thinking about how to save the most amount of people not saving specific people and obviously you understand abby's point of view. Just saying that you are taking that audience perspective to warp your understanding of a character's own perspective of the situation if you get what i mean. ANyways can't wait for the next episode.
