I told you that something wasn't adding up in Isobel story because why Damon would go inside someone he doesn't know apartment to kill that person, also he had to be invited in, the show is giving you al the clues you need to pay attention to for you to doubt the more obvious narrative. So, Damon din't kill her, she seek him, she begged him to turn her. So he has nothing to do with Isobel disappearance, she didn't wanted to be around, nor to have contact with Alaric and Elena. Elena and Katherine are polar opposite, the fact that she cares about Damon prove her good nature. Katherine is manipulative piece of work, nothing like Elena.

Women usually change their names as they get married so it would make sense that Katherine’s female line wouldn’t have her last name. Most European cultures surname (sir-name) is the father’s. Unless it’s a single mom sometimes they carry their mom’s last name. I remember doing our family tree and it’s super frustrating even going back a few generations. All the marriages, divorces, baby daddies, cousins w/different last names - it’s hella confusing.

To clarify (no spoilers), the ring did not stop Damon from compelling Alaric when he did. Alaric was holding onto Vervain and they showed him gripping it; that's why the compulsion didn't work. Not the ring.
