“Don’t trust anyone, not even yourself.” — Birdsong’s Rules
Chapter 1
"You want me to kill him for you?" Birdsong asked the naked woman in his bed.
Connie turned her head to look him in the eye. "You offering? To kill him?"
He shrugged, a peculiar movement for a man lying down with a long-legged blonde on top of him. "If you want him dead, I could do that," he said.
It didn't sound like bragging, but it might have been the liquor talking. He might have been offering to take out the garbage on trash night for all the emotion his voice carried. She quirked an eyebrow at him, and he raked a calloused thumb across her ribs, causing both of them to smile.
They’d had enough to drink to feel loose and comfortable. There are only so many things to do in a hotel room in Las Vegas -- one of them is drinking and the others are not. Outside, a hot January sun blistered anyone foolish enough to be walking around, but the room stayed cool and dark; heavy curtains pulled tight against the hostile day. Winter had evidently missed its connecting flight.
She rolled over to reach for a pack of cigarettes on the nightstand but then pushed them away. She’d have to go out to the balcony to smoke, and she’d have to get dressed or at least put on a bikini top. Besides, the January heat was deadly. ”My stepfather, you'd kill him for me, just like that?" she asked. She'd been talking about how much she hated the man for more than an hour when Birdsong made the sudden offer to solve her problem.
"I said so." Lazily, he pulled a foot up to where her calf swelled above her ankle and dragged the ball of his foot down.
Like the thumb on her ribs, it sent a shiver through both of them. “You’d get caught,” she said.
