I prewatched this movie, and you all could've been reading my mind. Then I read what the movie is actually about... first, not only the voice break but the general anxiety, drug use, sleep paralysis and general dickishness is real. Abel (real person) blames this all on the The Weeknd persona (represented by Barry). The movie is about Abel reconnecting with his authentic self (Jenna) and leaving The Weeknd behind. With this filter, it's still self-indulgent and badly done, but at least one can see what he was trying to do. This is Purple Rain for millennials.
