Woodsy Boredom
I'm disappointed that comic book afficionado Eli seems to know nothing about DC's characters from the 1940s. It's like a jazz fan who's doesn't know what Preservation Hall means...
Markus Nävergård
or he is a insane person beliving himself to be both those things
Uriah Jackson
I'm disappointed that Hawkman's origin didn't come up. It's so messy. Either he's the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian that was betrayed by evil priest because of a love triangle, or he's a Thanagarian (an slightly advanced tech warrior culture) with... "nth metal" weaponry. Those two are so similar.
Shawne W Winter
... you know Dr fate predates Dr Strange by over 20 years?
Fluidkaos
I had to stop in the middle of the hallway at work because I was laughing so hard.
Leslie Marchant
My hubs and I watched this one. About 15 minutes in, we were calling it "Knock Off: The Movie".

Yeah, it's a low bar, but shazam is probably the best of the dc movies, especially if you exclude the ones outside of the main timeline.

by dc standards it's decent enough, not good, but I've seen much worse. It's on hbomax iirc
Stefan
1. This was possibly the funniest episode of GAM ever, and that really is a high bar. 2. Can we please get a review of the new Top Gun?! My friend described it as "nearly 2 hours of Boomers jizzing on your face," and I have to admit I agree
Taylor
This movie is way wackier than I expected. I might have to watch it.
Ness Bivins
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and I also thoroughly enjoyed your roasting it

I swear I remember jsa being alt universe justice league…what am i thinking of?
potato potato also another potato
Pretty sure they did both versions of justice league, so 6 hours! It’s a fun listen, for a lot of the same reasons as this I kept putting it off so I could watch the Snyder cut first but…mehhhhh
potato potato also another potato
Watched it last night before the episode and…by dcu standards it’s pretty good…a very low bar mind you, but all the same. Certainly better than Sony’s nonsense, morbius make black adam look like citizen Kane, but a good dc movie is still generally weaker than a bad mcu movie (with 3-ish exceptions) How dc’s animation team can be so good when their live action stuff is so bad is a mystery

If it hasn’t been mentioned elsewhere, task force x is suicide squad, more specifically the govt agency that runs it, so that prison and those random troops in the prison are part of Amanda walker’s crew (the lady hawk man is taking to when you first see him). Likewise the blond lady who takes custody of the rock is (I think) a specific character from her crew that has appeared in other stuff

I was thinking I’d heard that somewhere, that Shazam felt like a Superman ripoff because he IS a Superman ripoff that dc just bought the rights to and incorporated into their own mythos
Mark H
It was meh. Not remotely worth the hype. But it was mildly entertaining.
Denise Huston
"X characters predate MCU analogues!" Yep, but MCU did it well. Yell at DC for making bad choices.
Denise Huston
Every single time they do a DCU film, the comments are all just, "OKAY BUT...!" from DC apologists. Guys. Nobody cares about canon accuracy in the bonus episodes of an atheist movie review podcast. Save it for Letterboxed.
Look over there!
Eli dying over Captain Fate taking a shit in the Times Square Toys R' Us and it's callbacks helped cover up the fact that HawkMAN proceeded Marvel's Hawk by almost 30 years...And the JSA was around before the Justice League... Dare I go back and listen to the Justice League review? I skipped it with the intention of eventually watching the movie buuuuut it's 4 hours, so yeah I'll probably pass.
B. King
How badly do they explain the origins and plot of this film? So bad that my 14 year old and her friends went and watched it, then walked out pissed because they thought it was a reboot/ripoff of Shazam.
Robin - Books That Burn
“…how bad was this movie?” “Well… we’re going to use the names from the movie, as humor, and it’ll work.”
Robin - Books That Burn
Somehow, the guys actually using most of the characters’ real names and the actual terms for the macguffins sounds even more ridiculous than their usual route of giving everyone ridiculous/pithy nicknames.
Spacesuit Spiff
Knowing nothing about this movie, I spent the whole time picturing one of those ensemble heroes as a very jewish Fuckable Meat Cyberpunk Guy and that was entertaining
Neptune
My wife and I were roasting this one in the theater and that's the only thing that kept us there. We weren't bothering anyone because we had the place to ourselves.
Annika Peterson
I watched half of this movie on Christmas, and it was so stupid I felt dumber for having seen even part of it. Ugh. What a waste of resources.
Danial Gibson
Just saying, Stargirl boosted JSA's image in the public. The average person might actually know what that is. Not that this movie does anything with that.
TenaciousB
This movie was so painfully stupid. The only reason I watched to the end was my hopeless infatuation with Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Henry Cavill.
Mockingbird Nation
Did anyone else notice the score of the movie seemed to be MOCKING the characters?
Square root of negative one
It’s worth noting that Shazam (the original) did quite well. 7.0 on IMDB and grossed $140m US and $360m worldwide.
Markus D
I mean... I'm not a nerd who pays attention to super hero media at all, but I knew about Hawkman from the Justice League cartoon, at least.
tsukiouji
I'm so disappointed in you guys. You call yourself fans of terrible movies, but think that gruesome violence doesn't share a border with comedy? The ludicrous violence in this is *hilarious,* and intentionally so (probably)! AND nobody mentioned Aldis Hodge was Hawkman??? C'mon, guys!
Kevin C
Hawkmansplaning is an incredible joke
Buoyant Citrus
It wouldn't have saved the movie but they should have kept Oded Fehr as Dr Fate
Kevin C
In case you guy's see this Captain marvel (Shazam) was a ripoff of superman by a company called Fawcett comics with black adam being his evil rival and predecessor, hes was pretty popular in the 40's but the parent company had money troubles and got sued by DC's predecessor National comics for copying aspects of superman in concept and design, eventually the rights got sold to a different company and when that company folded got sold to DC but during that brief window in time between acquisition Marvel made a character named Captain Marvel to fuck with DC so if they wanted to use the character they couldn't sell the books under his name they got around this by sell the books as The Power's of Shazam leading to decades of confusion over if his named was Captain marvel or Shazam
VK
I suppose I have an excuse to watch Black Adam now...oh and gentlemen if you read this. Fairly new patron, I'm going through the catalog and I've absolutely burst out laughing in public spaces multiple times. Thank you for that, it's much appreciated.
The Cassiopeia Quinn Team
There are times when I'm sure Eli hides his nerd power level for the sake of the podcast. And sure, he protects his livelihood.
Damion Damaske
I'm surprised Eli didn't bring up that almost all the JSA characters predate Marvel. Many by decades.
Krostos
Dr. Fate came first, I'm just going to say that. And the Justice Society is literally what the League used to be called. Hawkman isn't that much of a unknown... Am I just a nerd?
Jeb Dale
The action movie so bland I got bored midway through and built with LEGOs instead!
CarrieBoo
YAAAAAAAASSSSSSS. This movie was so MEDIOCRE! *edit: a testament to this film would be I did, in fact, fall asleep while listening to this episode. Oops.
Ed “Short Arms” Marcus
What is … Black Adam ?
