So according to IMDB: Although not credited on the finished film, co-writer/producer Will Smith was responsible for much of the movie's direction. M. Night Shyamalan was primarily in charge of the blocking (composition of shots, placement of the camera) and the visual aspects of the film (color and design), and had actually suggested Smith for the supporting role as the father. It was Smith who dictated the development of the story (which he originally conceived) and the onscreen action, and personally coached his own son Jaden Smith in his performance. Both the story and acting were heavily criticized and Shyamalan decided to take the blame.

Melville also wrote "Billy Bud" which is an erotic novel about the new hot guy on the ship with muscles (Billy) and the spiteful love triangle that forms between Billy, the Captain, and the First Mate. There's also some religious allegory where the Captain = god; the First Mate = Satan; and Billy is Jobe and/or Jesus.

Exactly. We already have space suits, I'm sure we could figure this out as a species. I think Adam from YMS mentioned this sort of thing in his review. I definitely remember him talking about how ridiculous the sealing door in the crashed space ship that formed AROUND a dead body but kept raising again until Jayden pushed it out of the way was; why make something that can form around stuff if it's going to automatically unseal itself when there's an obstruction?

Ok, Will Smith the performer is charismatic, engaging, and responsive to the other characters (most of the time), but he's certainly not a good actor. Kinda like how Hulk Hogan was a great performer, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone accuse him of being a great actor.

Don't think anyone mentioned that the reason his sister died but he didn't was because she hid him in that bubble thing. You know, because smell can be blocked by an airtight seal. This entire movie was so borked from it's premise alone, a properly designed suit would've been more effective than training people to feel no fear. I also kind of though fear was on a per-event basis. You can overcome a fear of spiders but still be afraid of heights for example, doesn't seem like everyone who can fight the fear monsters would need to be an asshat.

I first heard about this movie through the YMS review back when it came out, and since then, Jayden Smith's teacher calling him an "ahtstanding" student has lived rent-free in my head.
