I’m late with this, but whatever. It used to happen, before Obergefell, that one member of a gay/lesbian couple might adopt the other so they could inherit property. A woman I knew in the 70s did that—she legally adopted her long-time companion (“roommate,” ahem) so her nieces and nephews could not contest the will that left everything to said companion.

Just a note, you can adopt adults if they want to be adopted. I know this because my ex-husband's mom adopted the cleaning lady from where she worked. Not the weirdest thing that happened in that family.
