Flying Saucer Video (reboot) pages 1-5 and announcement
🕑 Added 2024-05-30 06:01:07 +0000 UTCHello! what the heck is this? So this month was really intense with multiple cons (thank you for coming to see me!!!!) and more hours at work. I was way too exhausted to work on Ethernet Cable Girlfriend, which is a project I take pride in being well written and illustrated. It made me miss the early Matchmaker days when I was just posting extremely casual silly comics for people to enjoy without them being any kind of hard work. I've decided that alongside the project I've been working on here, I'd like to do that kind of thing again too!
When I thought about what story to use for a silly matchmaker style comic strip, my mind wandered back to Flying Saucer Video, a comic I was making about a year ago. I'm still proud of it, but it was my first post-matchmaker comic and sophmore slump hit me hard. I didn't know what I wanted it to be, and it felt like I was doing everything I could to keep the train going laying down the track as I went. I petered out and didn't know how to continue it.
To fans of that incarnation of the comic, I'm sorry to rework it into something else and start from scratch, but I had so much fun making these silly pages and have a really wonderful picture in my head of the fun comic strip version of this story. I hope people like it!!
Juggling two projects will be new territory for me, so thank you for your patience as I figure things out! My plan is that this will be a casual project that posts publicly (with early pages here), and that ethernet cable girlfriend will continue as it has been, though maybe at a slightly slower pace. We're going to see how it goes! I think a fun casual webcomic, and a more graphic novel-y story will be a good balance of artistic projects instead of just hunkering down on one thing for a year at a time lol. I will be declaring next month "comics june" due to the extreme ammount of comics that will be drawn!!!!
This is my plan for now but I'm going to take some time to think before I announce anything publicly! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this idea and these pages! I want to work on some new ethernet cable gf before I go any deeper into this new thing!

Thank you!!! And thank you for putting your trust in me! I donβt want to give away too much away about this new version, but this story takes place about a year before the store shuts down, and by the time we reach that point the characters will be more similar to that first story! I dialed everyone back a lot to begin with so weβd have more room for fun and interesting growth. OG tulip is not forgotten!!!!!!

hell YES it's back. kinda sad Tulip's personality seems to have shifted away from her amazing "lesbian who wants everyone to find her hot" persona in v1 but i am trusting the vision

Definitely a punchline!! Looking back on 2019 is kind of a dark comedy lmao

Thank you!! I suck at designing characters but I got lucky with these guys, I like their vibes sm

Thank you!! π my thoughts exactly!! I like most of the ideas from the old one but they came very quickly because the pages were a lot of work. I hope this one gives a lot more breathing room to take things slow!

Thank you!! π very inspired by the ending of lady bird where the family is seemingly going to be alright financially but the year is 2007 lol. What is fun slice of life without a little impending doom!!

"The year is 2019, and everything is perfect" hits a little harder than it should, I think. Also, this new introduction does create a nice little sense is impending doom, both for the closing of the store and just, 2020.

the free-form pace of the reboot already feels like an upgrade. I love both versions of Flying Saucer just because the characters are so fun to follow and itβs a great representation of working in a video store but I think this new direction allows for better character development and more time to breathe. Iβve been hoping to see a return to the Flying Saucer Video store and Iβm so happy that day has finally arrived!!! Canβt wait for more!!!~

I don't know if it's meant to be a punchline but as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about 2019 that last line really got me. glad to see FSV come back! I need to see the Franky Tulip relationship I've lived it and I need to see it on the page now.
