I think it’s a regift…someone gave it to her and she gave it to her brother not realizing/or forgetting it was engraved or she knew and tried to make up a reason as to why her initial was there instead of admitting it’s a regift.

did she buy it second hand or something? that’s a lot of money to spend on just a figurine brand new, maybe she found it second hand and either didn’t know the engraving was there, or just thought the initials were close enough. when her brother asked her about it, maybe it’s possible that she got embarrassed that they saw the initials and didn’t want to tell them that it was second hand, so she made up a stupid story. i’m not sure, it’s just so weird 😭😭😭
