That was my question too. I get forgetting about them because out of sight out of mind, but if they aren’t important why is it a big deal to delete them? It’s giving a bit of hoarder mentality (afraid to lose anything that links to the past).

I’m with you! I also just let my phone auto delete messages after a year, like if I wasn’t looking for it I don’t need it. Keeping ex’s texts may be done unintentionally, but justifying having them as “no big deal” is strange to me! Just delete it if asked to and move on.

I think I’m the only one who thinks it’s wild to keep texts for more than a year. But my email inbox is also cleaned up.

Texts and pictures are like a part of my memory and it feels super intrusive for someone to dictate what should and should not keep. Okay nudes for example are an exception, you should definitely delete that after a breakup. But texts and normal photos, no way. The halfway point is maybe to move them from phone gallery to a hard disk, if they would have more peace of mind. But if you cant trust your partner with some texts from years ago, how can you enough trust to build and maintain a good relationship?

My boyfriend found one of those cutsie coupon booklets from an ex, we read them, then just put them back in the box. I have videos and pictures of my ex's still because they're the only ones I have from those moments. I don't think anyone should demand that you delete memories.
